Chapter XII: Keep My Change? (The Day the Dollar Died Series)
by John Galt
January 13, 2010
I love reading the comments, which I have to since I’m the one that has to approve them and I love the props and reasonable criticism equally. A major THANK YOU to everyone who has jumped on board for our every Wednesday reading session and to all of those that have taken the time and trouble to actually translate some of if not all of this series into twelve different languages! To say that has humbled me a wee bit is an understatement (ok, so I’m humbled a lot but heck, it makes me feel good to know the world enjoys this also). This edition might be a little bit longer as current events as I type this are now tying into this chapter and unfortunately becoming a reality before our very eyes. All I can say at this point in time is read what this piece of FICTION engulfs, enjoy the new characters and pray to God that this never comes true. I might be an optimist with the local view on this subject, I am just not sure at this point in time……

“JAMES! HONEY! What the hell is this spray painted on my house?” I yelled again. My wife came out of the front door looking totally perplexed and yelling back “Don’t you yell at me mister. You left us alone all night. Do you have any idea how little sleep we’ve had? You go out on an adventure and we had to deal with all kinds of issues!” I stood at my porch staring at the front door wondering what the the hell the “X” and all the other stuff meant. She came outside, slammed the door and as I pointed towards it she started stammering “Uh, uh, I, uh, I didn’t know what they were doing.” My Irish heritage based temper said “What THEY are you talking about?” She walked up to the door and touched the paint to see if it was still wet and started to speak slowly, “Well honey, about nine fifteen last night two Sarasota City cops showed up with some guy wearing one of those government windbreakers. I wasn’t sure if it said FEMA or what on the back as James swears it said OES and they proceeded to walk around the house trying to get inside. James and I opened the front door and yelled at them asking what they wanted. They came over here, asked if the owners of the home were around and I informed them that I was one of the owners and that my husband was several blocks away helping an elderly friend. The one officer stood by his side and this guy, I guess from the Federal government started asking questions.”
“Honey, sweetheart” I hesitated and started to sweat a bit as I talked to her, “what in the world could he be asking to have my house and Jame’s house spray painted with red x’s and a bunch of gobbledygook?” The woman I love started to tremble, nervous as if questioned by a witness on Perry Mason’s old television show and in a low, soft, almost sorrowful voice she replied, “Oh John, they demanded to know if we had guns in the house, if we were hiding anyone that was not a family member, if anyone in the house was on probation or had a criminal record and then asked how much cash we had. I told them a lie and said we only had about eighty dollars and one shotgun and then they spray painted the door, put an envelope in our mailbox and started to question James.” I looked over at James and asked him how he dealt with it as he looked as if he had just finished a triathlon as soaked as his t-shirt was. “John, I lied through my damned teeth to those clowns. They asked about the shotgun I was holding and told them it was yours and was holding it while they questioned your wife. The local yocals asked that I set it back in the house and of course, I asked your sweetie for permission.” I snickered as she grinned and of course James, a lover of tall tales, continued the story, “Then they asked if I owned any guns, of course I said no, my wife was a Jesuit and then I told them that they needed to check the house out a block over where them illegals live as I thought they had guns and drugs and that perked the Fed jerk right on up. By the way, his jacket said ‘OES’ whatever the hell that is. They really were nosy about you and your wife though.”
I told my wife I would be right back and walked over to the mailbox with James as he walked to his and checked out the rather thick package marked ‘OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS ENCLOSED’ and wondered just what in the heck this was about. “Let’s go inside your home and make sure they didn’t break in” James suggested to which I eagerly nodded. “I wonder what those markings mean” I asked him. James replied “We’ll ask the deputy up the street later on if his shift ever ends this evening.” We walked around the house, shotgun in my hands, pistol in his, walking slowly room to room to make sure the house was secured. In the mean time the wife continued to crank the kitchen back up, as the power was on again at least for the moment, starting some coffee and fixing breakfast for both of us before the bacon and eggs spoiled in the refrigerator. “Honey, if you don’t mind, I’m going to cook up everything we have in the fridge and freezer. I fear that the power will be off and on for days to come” she yelled out. As James and I met back in the hallway he said “Good freaking idea! I’m going to run home and tell the wife to hop to it! Without Oprah she should do some work for once.” I looked at him and said firmly “Dude, seriously. She’s a little freaked out right about now. Be gentle and show her some love. We’re all on the razor’s edge over everything that has happened since Sunday.” James nodded, almost ashamed for what he had said, and headed out the door. I walked into the kitchen, hugged my wife and told her, “Let’s see what the mail brought today. I figure we may have won the lottery for once and maybe this envelope is stuffed full of cash.”
As I ripped it open and poured the contents on the table, the smell of fresh coffee brewing, eggs and bacon sizzling away and seeing the exhausted woman I love in the kitchen slaving away over the stove distracted me from the contents. It was almost like a regular Sunday morning except we both realized that the stores would have to open soon and food would be the first necessity to be fulfilled. “Oh my God” I uttered as she brought me a cup of coffee while I picked up the contents from the envelope. “Honey, you have to see this. You will never believe what we have to do now” I yelled out stunned at the stupidity in front of me.
February 25, 2010 11:17 A.M. Eastern Time
Tom and Sandy were sitting at the sofa pouring over the stack of mail they had just cleaned out from the mailman. It was a truly amazing sight. A letter from Citibank N.A. advising them that no payments were necessary for the next ninety days as the national emergency had suspended their card and payments. A note from the mortgage company advising them that all payments were suspended for ninety days. Their bank, Suntrust, advising them that the emergency had frozen their account and that all funds would be available no later than June 1, 2010 but that their ATM card could be used by February 28th. “Mama Lil, can you believe this?” Tom asked her. She looked at him for the first time in their lives together with a stunned look and said “Son, I’ve never seen this before in my life. I didn’t even know they could hold your money like this without giving it back to you when you wanted it. This is like the 1930′s but worse. Did those clowns suspend interest being charged on your bills during this suspension?” Tom started to read the letters again and sure enough “Yup, they basically froze us in time Mom. IF we still have jobs, this could be great if they could figure out a way to pay us.”
Just as Tom was reading the document entitled SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE OF YOUR DOLLAR CARD AND TRANSITION ACCOUNT, the doorbell rang causing us all to jump out off of our tails. Lillian put her hand on her shoulder holster and moved slowly to the hallway motioning Tom to answer the door while Sandy went into the dining room. Suddenly she screamed out “There’s someone in our back yard!” and that caused Lillian to head towards the kitchen. Then from the front door a male voice yelled out “Georgia State Patrol! This is Lieutenant McCord, do not do anything rash. We have an officer in the back yard checking your property!” Lillian sighed, sounding somewhat relieved and muttered “Idiots. I could have shot the moron.” Tom patted her on the shoulder then moved into the living room yelling “I’m opening the front door and I am unarmed. Please don’t shoot me.” Sandy put her head into her hands, half relieved, half embarrassed, and totally unsure why he said that.
As Tom slowly opened the front door a young black woman in her twenties wearing a winter jacket with “OES” emblazoned with an eagle symbol holding wheat in one claw and what looked like a copy of the Constitution in the other then she started what sounded like the phoniest spiel that Tom had heard since the Shamwow infomercials broke. “HI! Sandy and Tom Lewis? I’m Karen 17905, your neighborhood representative from the Office of Emergency Services a new branch of the Federal Emergency Management Agency here to insure you have food, water, power and everything you will need until the nation returns to normal. I hope that the mailman has delivered your instruction package with your new dollar cards and all of the instructions on how to use them. President Obama and the unified Congress have empowered me to help you in any way that I can.” Before she could utter another word, Tom put his hand up slowly as to motion her to stop and said “Do you ever breath 17905 or what?” Sandy and Lillian were peering out of the door by that time behind Tom wondering what the commotion was about.
“Oh Mr. Lewis, you’re such a nice man and your wife looks ready to work with us also. If you don’t mind we would love to come inside and spend a few minutes with you. The officer in the back is just making sure that any of the felons from the Great South Atlanta Fire aren’t hiding here and wants to make sure you are safe and secure.” By this time Lillian had heard enough. “What south Atlanta fire young lady? I listened to the radio all night long to WSB and other stations and nothing was uttered about it?” Lillian asked skeptically. Sandy, not watching her mother cut her off and started to talk “Would you please come in. I know you just have to be freezing out there. Would you like some coffee or hot cocoa?” Lillian gave her daughter the dirtiest look imaginable as she huffed off to the kitchen while the door was opened for their guests this morning. “Ma’am, I’d love a cup of coffee, black please the State Patrol officer said, looking as if he had been working for several days straight. “Mom, do you want to get that or should I?” Sandy yelled out. “I got it honey and officer I am carrying but I’ve got a permit, so please don’t taser me” Lillian yelled back.
The lieutenant snickered “No problem Ma’am, I’m too tired to taser anyone this early.” With that Karen felt obligated to start talking with her script stating that “You know that old phrase that I am from the government and I’m here to help you? Well I am and I can because right now, nobody else can. The OES is here to insure that when you go shopping, go to the store or return to work next Monday everything is in place to insure America gets back on its feet right away.”
Lillian looked at Karen as she handed the coffee to the officer and just sighed in her south Georgia drawl, “Excuse me please, I”m going to go take a dump. I’ve heard enough.”

“Sir, I’m not trying to be rude, but just staring at each other isn’t getting my job done nor helping you in this matter. I have orders to inventory all firearms and register them on behalf of the Governor’s office as the President ordered for those districts deemed actively engaged at this time” the young Sergeant stated firmly and hinting that more would happen should compliance be an issue. The two privates behind him were freezing as they held their M-16′s obviously not wanting to spend a lot of time outside of their Humvee running at the end of the driveway. “Honey, get my shotgun out of the shoe closet. The military needs to register it” Mike yelled out to his wife. As Mike ushered them into the foyer, she nodded and walked down the hallway to grab the weapon.
Sally, knowing how to handle the gun better than the two privates, promptly walked down the hallway with the twin barrels popped open pointing to the floor with the two twelve gauge shells in one hand, the weapon carefully balanced in her grip in the other. “Here you go sir, do you need anything else?” Sally asked politely. “I think we have it under control now” the Sergeant snapped back. “Mr. Elmendorff, your question is not without merit. But we are the last line right now between anarchy and the Constitution. We will do whatever it takes to enforce the laws of the land. So please, don’t questiong my patriotism and I won’t question yours” the Sergeant snapped off. He handed the shotgun to one of the privates who keyed the serial number into a large device with a printer and a bar code was spit out and stuck on the rifle butt. “Sir, if this weapon is fired for any reason other than hunting or target practice, we will need for you to report it to us. The crime rate is very high just sixty miles west of you in North Dakota and they are under statewide martial law. You are responsible for this weapon and no sales, transfers or improper usage is permitted under any circumstances. The martial law declaration will probably be extended to the Western counties of Minnesota tomorrow due to the lack of stability west of I-94. I hope that I have made myself clear sir” Sergeant Blaine said. He then handed them their mail and spoke softly “You may want to read this. The mail service is running again and soon your landlines will be back up. I know this has been hard but its even tougher on the military sir. You have no idea.”
Mike knew that the Sergeant was not happy with his initial comments. “Son, I know you’re just following orders, hell I did that in the muck of ‘Nam. I hate to ask this of you but I need a favor. That lady on the couch is Mrs. Monckton and she received a phone call about her husband being in a military hospital in Fargo after an ambush west of here at a checkpoint. Can you tell me what is going on please to set her mind at ease?” As Mike said that Sally handed all three of them some small Styrofoam cups filled with black coffee, trying to relax them from what was a tense meeting at first. “Mr. Elmendorff, thank you for your service and understanding,” the Sergeant started speaking slowly, “there has been no ambush. Heck we haven’t even set up the checkpoint yet. The men and equipment are moving out to the crossroads at 1700 local tonight at dusk. We have to clear out a mobile home park nearby where the criminals have been setting up shop first.”
Mrs. Monckton broke out in tears of joy as Sally grabbed her and hugged her. “Sarge, thank you. You’ve made one person happy today even though I am not thrilled with this registration thing” Mike said smiling as he watched his wife hold her tightly. “Sir, I am not too thrilled either, but orders are orders” the Sergeant said. As they said their goodbyes, Mike escorted the men out to their vehicle and decided that now might just be a good time to secure his property. “You guys stay warm, I’m hoping to keep things tight here” he yelled out through his jacket. The Guardsmen hopped into their Humvee and headed over towards the farm a few miles south of him. Mike waved, then shut the gate finally, locking it tightly and then threw another chain and lock around it.
As he walked back into the house he noticed the two women chattering away almost relieved that this day would be better and wondering what the large OES envelope was. Mike did not care. He walked back into his other closet in the spare bedroom and started grabbing magazines and pistols. “Honey, you’ll get to keep the forty-five, I’m carrying the thirty-eight, the nine and my Mini-30. The other shotgun can stay in the bedroom with the other forty-five. I’ll be damned if they’ll ever track all of these down. I bought them from individuals and there’s no record of my purchasing all these” and with that rant over with, he looked at Mrs. Monckton and handed her an old twenty-five caliber pistol he purchased in the 1980′s. “You might need this, I don’t trust anyone now and I don’t’ want you to feel insecure” he told her softly, “Please plan on staying here until we hear from your husband or he comes back.”
Just as the tension in the room started to settle, the phone rang, much to their surprise and as Sally picked it up the following was heard:
“HELLO. THIS IS BOB 13212 AND I AM YOUR OFFICE OF EMERGENCY SERVICES NEIGHBORHOOD ADMINISTRATOR. THIS IS A PRE-RECORDED MESSAGE TO ADVISE YOU THAT WE WILL BE IN YOUR AREA WITHIN THE NEXT SEVENTY-TWO HOURS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR NEEDS. IF YOU NEED IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE, PRESS ZERO NOW AND HELP WILL BE SENT TO YOUR ADDRESS WE HAVE ON FILE MATCHING THIS PHONE NUMBER. 911 SERVICES HAVE BEEN RE-ACTIVATED FOR YOUR AREA AND NORMAL TELEPHONE SERVICES SHOULD BE RESTORED BY SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27TH AT 8 A.M. February 25, 2010 11:05 A.M. Central Time, Just outside of DeWitt, AR
The temperature outside was twenty-seven degrees this morning and the barefoot men inside the tent were all whimpering, chattering their teeth and some in tears after over two hours of sitting exposed and handcuffed to the center pole and each other. “For God’s sake man, we’re all freezing to death” one of the prisoners yelled out. The guard opened the tent, yelled out “Who said that?” and then as the man who said it tried to hide behind another prisoner he grabbed the taser and stunned him, causing several other prisoners to fall to the ground into the frozen mud as he collapsed. Two other men walked inside, grabbed the comatose man and unlocked his handcuffs then dragged him outside into a waiting truck. “Lewis, you can go walking or I can drag you. It’s your call” the soldier barked out. “I’ll walk” the Pastor said, “and what the heck is going on, half these men half frostbite by now.” The soldier, an officer of some sort but not wearing insignia he would know grabbed his wrists and unshackled him from the rest of the group without saying a word. “Mr. Lewis, you’re going to Pine Bluff with big mouth out in the truck. We’re going to find out what happened in Little Rock either the nice way or the hard way but everyone in here had best know, we will find those responsible. You can have your lives back or lose them, we really don’t care if you had any part of this” the soldier said.
“Here’s your uniform. Wear it, don’t bitch and don’t speak unless spoken to” a young private said, throwing the Pastor a bright orange jumpsuit with the letter “P” on the back and a pair of flip-flops. “Follow me” he said next and then shoved him into the canvas covered back of an old military truck with five other prisoners, all shackled to the floor. The guard grabbed his hand, handcuffed them then chained him to the floor of the truck uttering these instructions “If you talk to each other we have clearance to stop at the side of the road and shoot the guilty parties. Someone is going to pay for Little Rock.”
The men were terrified when they looked back at the young guard who then shut the flaps and the vehicle pulled out heading out to the Pine Bluff regional command. The good Pastor had no clue as to what was going on and was praying in silence for the people he thought were still locked up inside his church. Before the next prayer could be recited, he was able to peek through the cracks of the canvas and see the remains of Highway 165 behind him. There were burned out cars and trucks just about six miles west of town he figured. There were two bodies being picked clean by what looked like wolves or coyotes. “What the heck happened this fast” he wondered to himself. As the truck veered sharply right he figured that they were turning in Lodges Corner before cutting over towards Pine Bluff. The sharp turn did not distract him as much as the mobile home park on fire he saw in the distance and what he could have sworn were gunshots or firecrackers in the distance. With the next sharp turn he noticed that the Humvee what was in front was now behind them and he had best stop trying to see what was going on or had happened. Pine Bluff was less than an hour away and finally he might just get some answers as to why the military, whatever kind of military it was, treated everyone so harshly like they had left America.

Wendy Listels was the most excited twenty-two year old in the entire line of people who stood outside of the Safeway Store on North Circle Drive this afternoon. Here it was just three whole days after the banks shut down and her President was able to get money into her hands and open the stores up. “Have you been listening to the Afternoon Drive with Katie Couric and Senator Daschle on America Radio? Now that he’s been reappointed and promised to help our nation, I’m so pumped! My dollar card got a three hundred dollar advance, how much did you get?” she babbled on and on and on to the poor stranger in front of her. “IF YOU HAVE NUMBERS 1-6-5 THROUGH 1-8-5 IT IS YOUR TURN TO ENTER THE STORE, PLEASE BE PREPARED TO PRESENT YOUR DOLLAR CARD AND DRIVERS LICENSE TO THE GUARD AT THE ENTRANCE” the voice bellowed out through the speakers on the side of the store. Wendy was pumped. Normalcy was coming. Life was going to get better she figured now that her empty fridge would see some fresh fish and salad fixings to keep her on her diet.
“Ms. Listels, is this address current?” the OES officer asked. “Yes sir, it is still the correct address, but I do have a new phone number or do you have all that” the talkative, almost teenager like young woman said. “That’s okay miss, you can proceed in. Your card is set to a one hundred dollar limit but you are free to spend whatever cash you have left in United States Federal Reserve Notes also up to one hundred additional dollars” the officer said. “What is a Federal Reserve Note?” she asked innocently. The officer sighed, leaned back in his chair and pulled a dollar bill out of his pocket and said “anything that says this on the top” pointing to the words “Federal Reserve Note” emblazoned on the top. “Oh, I’m sorry, I always called them dollars” she said sheepishly.
As she grabbed the cart and started to walk down the first aisle, she noticed the stocking was somewhat different even though this was a better Safeway than others. The fresh vegetable section had signs everywhere “LIMIT TWO PER PERSON” for everything in the area and there was not much there. After grabbing some lettuce, onions, tomatoes which looked old, some cabbage, Arugula and two bundles of carrots, Wendy steered over to the meat department looking for any fish. Pressing the buzzer to get someone’s attention in the butcher shop created quite a stir though as five other shoppers stopped dead in their tracks, stared at her like she was an idiot waiting to see what would happen next. To Wendy’s relief as she blushed a butcher opened the door and stepped out saying “Can I help you miss?” Wendy took a deep gulp then asked softly “What happened to all the seafood? Do you have any fish?” The butcher looked down and said to her “Miss, all we have is in the frozen area and you’re limited to twelve ounces per person per week right now.”
Wendy was shocked but said thanks and moved on. She almost ran to the frozen section when she noticed all of the fish in that area were the same in plain white boxes marked “USDA SPECIAL ALLOCATION RATIONS, 12 OZ. HADDOCK” to which she grabbed one hoping that nobody would beat her to it. After loading that in her cart she went to the diet foods aisle only to see nothing she recognized, just cereals in plain white boxes marked “KELLOGG S 14 OZ. CORN FLAKES OES SPECIAL RATIONS” and others marked “POST CEREAL RICE CRUNCHIES OES SPECIAL RATIONS” which really perplexed her. As she went along the other aisles their appeared to be some normal items and lucky for her the shampoo she loved was still in stock.
After loading the cart up with what she figured was a two week supply of food and beauty products, she got in line to check out which to her surprise moved rather quickly. As the clerk checked her out, weird letters appeared in the display and that caused her to ask the cashier what was up with that. “Miss, we have some items that are ‘A’ level which are not taxed like your fresh and canned foods. Those food items deemed unnecessary for consumption are ‘B’ items and taxed at ten percent. All beauty and cleaning supplies you have are taxed as ‘C’ level items at fifteen percent and any other items like the flowers you have or the candy bars are considered non-necessity and declared ‘D’ taxation items. Today the ‘D’ tax is set at twenty-seven point four percent. The total for your order today is one hundred eighty-seven dollars and forty-four cents. Please swipe your D-Card now.” Wendy felt so smart as she pulled her fresh card out of her wallet and swiped it leaving the balance to be paid in cash. She smiled and handed over four twenties and a ten dollar bill which the cashier placed in the drawer and after shutting it handed her the receipt with a survey about the D-Card on the bottom. “Uh, where’s my change?” she asked the cashier. “Miss, apparently you did not read the instructions or hear the news. Unless you pay exactly, all change is considered a tax donation to the nation to help resolve the national deficit. Our instructions and per the letter of the law are to keep your change and thank you for your help. This money is being re-applied next month as a benefit to your D-Card and towards your daily income taxes. Please refer to page forty-seven of your instruction manual you received with the card. Next customer please.”
“Keep my change?!?” Wendy yelled out and as she did so one of the apparently private guards started to approach her. “Everything okay Miss?” he asked.
“Yeah, I guess so. At least I can go shopping again.”

Nice chapter, I noticed on your music post you saying that this chapter was dark. I’ll be amazed if you can come up with a plausible way to make things happy by the ending. When you’re already in free fall the only thing remaining is hitting bottom.

John, another illuminating yet bleak chapter, thanks for the wake up call. It’s easy to forget that within 24 hours of an event like this it will be dog eat dog, the veneer of civility WILL in most cases crumble. I have been prepping for something like this for a year now, and every week you mention several details of the events which COULD happen that gives me a chill; however it also allows me to be just a little bit more prepared. Thanks again, and congrats on the translations a book/movie deal can’t be far off.

John love your ‘blovel’, but I’m getting concerned by the day, what about our children, what kind of country are we going to give them, s@#!, I already saw this, and people will submit to anything to maintain some level of ‘normal’ and they don’t care about freedom, and you are right the military will follow orders, that’s always a good excuse.

The resurrection of the American spirit can be an engine of productivity, if that spirit can be freed from the fiscal oppression of banking and finance leaches.
The Federal Reserve needs to go.
The privatization of these banks which pay themselves billions while choking the globe must also end.

Excellent chapter. I was wondering how you were going to treat mortgages and credit cards payments. I hear people say that during hyperinflation you get to pay your debts off with dirt cheap money, but I thought they’d freeze payments and have them resume when the new currency was out. I hate to see you also think that’s possible.

Great Chapter John. (or whatever your name is…;-)
(clapping is heard in the background, as this movie fades into the darkness for another WEEK…)
Doesn’t that say it all, “at least I can go shopping again”…wow..isn’t that scary beyond words.
Glad to hear you’re being translated, keep up the good work.

Everytime I see a new chapter posting, I grab the cup of fresh coffee and sit for a good read. Thanks, John. Am truly enjoying the segments you post. Today’s story had the “impossibly dumb” individual that I was waiting to see pop up. Can’t help but think of how accurate her character is in relation to how folks really exist/think. Looking fwd to next posting.

Kudos to Steve Quayle for linking to this site. In a sick and twisted sense, I look forward to Wednesday’s now just so I can get the next chapter of this series. I love reading it but know the piper will be asking for his due soon. I feel the same way the author does, hopeful but resigned…one can only have so much hope when reality is staring you in the face. Lots of food for thought, though.
Note to Jaime, there is no happy ending. “Bottom” is when this country begins to resemble Soviet Union circa 1991-2.

Continues to be interesting.
Though during an emergency, the feds are unlikely to be able to find their rears (using both hands) in under 7 days, let alone: completely re-order the economy, create a new emergency organization (including printing jackets), partially restock groceries, lock down most urban and suburban areas, visit every household in the US, and create a database (with remote labelling and registration) to register all firearms.
If you do a rewrite of this at any future point (*cough*book*cough*), you might consider spacing out events in the timeline a bit.

I don’t agree with the last post that there can’t be a good ending…. I think we have an incredible spirit as a people and the theme of the story is the US defaulted debt. Therefore, the people in charge (whomever they may be) still have to create something that produces over time… AND there aren’t enough police and army people to control every single checkpoint forever. History has proven the people will not be slaves.. they aren’t anywhere on the planet at the moment. People can be molded to a thought however (sheeple) which is one direction. If the population goes gorilla then that is a different direction and they will win over time… looking forward to the next chapter.

One must wonder, if this scenario ever does play out how likely will it be that law enforcement and military will be going about life in a business-as-usual frame of mind? With the costs of goods and necessities beginning to spiral, I can’t help but think their paltry paychecks will not be enough incentive to keep going to work, especially with the increased risk. I look back on Katrina, when many NOPD officers didn’t show up because they were taking care of their families first and foremost.

I’m enjoying this series, and although some elements seem far-fetched, I do believe any outcome is possible. As someone who lives in an apartment and urban setting, I’d like to read more on how this plays out in that type of setting – where there are lots of people living on top of each other under very challenging circumstances. The D card and interest rate tiers is quite thought provoking…keep up the great work!

John: Those of us who have had experience in Federal or state and local government agencies know that what you began to describe today on the part of the Feds could only happen if plans, procurement and distribution chains had been in effect for at least a couple of years. Just the bidding process to get the OCS jackets made would have taken the better part of a year, honest. The packaging, storing and distribution of the food items would have taken even longer. Finally, the hardware and software aspects of the firearms registration, as well as the debit card systems would had to have been in the pipeline for many years. This would be just the type of crisis that the Rahm Emanuels of either party would have been salivating over in their twisted dreams all along.

Awesome blovel been enjoying it since the beginning. It has caused me to do much soul searching as a father of 5. I am still working through this monumental interview with Dr. Edwin Viera: http://www.thedailybell.com/724/Edwin-Vieira-the-Coming-Military-Crackdown.html
He suggests two proactive steps we hsould take as Americans to possibly fend off this outcome:
1. Try to start movements in states to start minting their own gold and solver coinage (I mailed Ron Paul since I am in Texas – to see if he has any comment on the idea)
2. We must all join militias which are the only way we can stand up to the potential of the US military taking control as a military coup after the government collapses.
I’d love to hear comments from this great audience here and John of course on these ideas.

I was also reading today that the real reason the US took out Saddam was that he was the first to threaten to not denominate his oil in US Dollars. The implication was that the US will be able to prolong the world’s acceptance of the Dollar far beyond any other country in the history of the world because we will be able to threaten or actually attack any country which stops playing by our rules (ie: accepting our debased currency). This is similar to my father’s argument the the rest of the world falls with us – so no one is incented to allow or foster the collapse of the US dollar.

President Obama and the unified Congress have empowered me to help you in any way that I can.”

If you read the financial news: The recession is over. The worldwide recovery has begun. Inventories are down, hiring will begin soon. The banksters are sorry for their sins and bonuses will be trimmed. The market rally will continue but at a slower pace. Retailers are hanging on after a better than expected holiday. The “experts”, and there were many, who have been predicting a crash last fall have all been proven wrong.
Strange how the more positive the news gets, the more uncomfortable I am becoming of a new bubble forming based on perception and lies. Nothing has changed for the better in the financial world since 2008 besides perception. Our debt levels are still increasing ever more rapidly, unemployment is double digit (10%/17.3%), and new taxes are about to wipe out any discretionary income the average American has left. The financial news is all good but the activity is unsustainable. Which makes the shocking way the earliest chapters played out with the collapse all the more plausible. After that, its anyone’s guess. Great writing and very entertaining John!

Just an additional warning to everyone; ABC news (thats right even the main stream news) reported that the winter wheat crop will be the lowest since 1913. And a contradiction is evident from the spokes people at the FDA; they are saying this will be the largest soybean harvest ever, yet the FDA declared the majority of the counties in the midwest to be a disaster. I think we are 3 months away from food prices going ballistic.

John,
I wonder if you will put something in your story about foreign troops trying to quell riots on U.S. soil? You probably already know that legislation was just passed allowing the President to be able to request UN troops in an economic collapse/wide-spread riots, such as this. Your story will probably lead to a return to “normalcy” but John, how will you envision that normalcy? I certainly would not want it back to the non-bipartisan,their own agenda,Republican/Democrats fighting that we see on TV everyday… and the corporate greed and big banks that have bankrupted so many people. And I also would not want an American “Fidel Castro” to emerge during this disaster to pretend he is trying to rally the everyone against these people.

I have to agree with JDB and Gray Fox….In 6 days there is no way there could already be food products with new labeling and distribution channels and the big govt mailing, and the D-Cards, etc. I could see some of that in 6 weeks or MONTHS, but not immediately. I DO think there could be a dizzying array of govt. proclamations right away that could be chilling, but just getting bodies (military, etc.) in position and trained in hteir new orders and duties doesn’t happen overnight. It would have had to be planned for years and already procured…and in today’s environment where every little thing gets leaked out on the Web, we would have seen such things already. I am NOT doubting that this country could devolve into something this dire, just that it is about impossible in only a week to have all of these govt processes in place and things like detailed large envelopes already in the mail, etc. I DO enjoy reading your work, and look forward to finding out what happens to the hams in it!

Great story John, I look forward to each new chapter. I’ve even been posting a link to hear over on Free Republic. It might read a bit more smoothly, however, if you adopted standard use of quotation marks for dialogue. Such as using commas with the attributions. Example, it should be,

not

It’s a small point, and there are some others, but they will make the story read more smoothly. They will also help you to avoid needless revision work later, if you plan to adapt this blovel as a full-length novel.

Most excellent series, sir.
I like how you depict a currency collapse/martial law takeover through your characters personal experiences. Very good work.
I also like how you don’t see all the er, militias putting on their capes and saving the day. I think most of them are strawmen the government uses to scare gun control legislation through. Are those the ones you hint being raided?
Yes, I believe there is a true underground-glad you’re not pulling them out yet.
Would it be possible to insert, say a gangbanger character, find out from their perspective about that riot?
I wince for the pastor…

The question that would determine the outcome will be – are their more truck drivers and Grandmothers than twenty-two year old idiots in this country. Wendy will fall in line, the others not so much. This country was founded by people that escaped tyranny. One could argue it takes a strong genetic trait to do that. That trait still exists in this story, in truck drivers and grandmothers.
There is a happy ending to the story, but it may not be happy for discrete individuals. The happy ending is the country is re-founded, on a constitutional basis. The cost never changes, it will be the same as it was the first time around in 1776.

A few thoughts:
When John is walking back from Old Man Lewis’, all the neighbors are out doing normal things. None of their doors got the paint treatment and personal inspection. John does have a CCW, as we learned when he and the wife tried to take their walk on the bridge. That goes a long way to explain the island’s power structure attitude to the ordinary citizen. It is also showing me that organizing a “block party” defense of their cul-de-sac means a lot of folks will be armed with kitchen knifes and shovels, better known as no defense at all.
If this little identification scheme is going on in more places (besides the island), then the follow up squads (if John G. has them appearing) have a visual on where to go. Remember Michigan’s camps are active and we are only guessing who is being taken there (plus other camps around the country one assumes). Perhaps you all remember how one of O’s first acts last year was to get the Census Bureau out and taking a GPS of everyone’s front door? Combine the GPS, visual marking, and a personal visit to confirm weapon(s) would make me nervous. John, James and the wives just haven’t put it together yet.
And wasn’t it thoughtful of the government to mark the door if anyone wants to go shopping for a gun or two? Would that increase or decrease the property’s value?
Then there is Mike the trucker. Before this chapter, Mike was at the submit or resist decision point. Considering that Mike just got scammed out of his load, saw the carnage on the highway, had another scam pulled on his friend the deputy’s wife, I’d say the sarge and his privates got lucky when Mike’s response was so mild. But old habits die hard. Like Mike not locking his gate. I’ve been locking my gate for over a year now and the crisis hasn’t even started yet.
And since there are a lot more readers out there who don’t post, let me clue you into something: If you are out in the country and you come to a locked gate, with or without a fence, and you go around or over that gate up to the house, you do so at your peril. Them’s the rules folks. It is not like in the city or burbs where you can walk on the guys grass or up the sidewalk and knock on the door at any house. Plus, in an emergency, a locked gate on a fenced property probably means the dogs are loose. Just a little hint to pass along to those that might need it.
Back to Mike. Note that Mike’s response to the visit is what I would term being more “situationally” aware. Being a vet stands him a good chance of getting special treatment. Think how the returning vets are being treated today with regards to getting gun permits. Some in the current Administration are even labeling them threats. Still to come is how far Mike takes his defensive measures. And who he classifies as friend or foe.
And then there is Wendy. I suppose all areas have their Valley Girls. Good thing her favorite shampoo was in stock as those split ends were really starting to get to her. Probably that was also consolation as she was still getting over the shock of the limited fish selection. Plus she had her flowers to cheer her up. Being a good little drone, I can see a future in the AES for her. A bubbly little thing explaining how the government is here to help you through the crisis so we can all get back to shopping! That is if she isn’t culled like a lot of drones will be.
A final thought on trading goods. IF you have all the things you need to run your house for as long as you think you will need to, then John G.’s tax scheme may give clues on categories to acquire. Booze and cigarettes are probably under the tax class D (or E, for a higher rate) if they are available at all. I don’t envy the government trying to maintain control of all the people off their meds plus those going through nicotine withdrawal. If a good is taxed high now, then after the crisis starts it will be taxed higher. Those are the items for trading. Personally, I don’t plan on becoming a traveling salesman anytime soon after the crisis starts. Maybe you could trade some with neighbors but word gets around and price gouging is a crime right up there with hoarding. So careful on the trading route.

Follow-up to the discussion of Perspective and in the context of the Haitian earthquake…
In a SHTF scenario the restrictions on access to medical supplies and personnel is critical to survival.
Unless you are a very adept physician-surgeon, you will be stuck in a scenario where drugs will expire, equipment will be unavailable, and systems to support your needs will be lost.
I have been very interested in the plight of the pastor and the doctor he left behind.
In this particular story, it is my view that the following circumstances might surface for medical facilities and practitioners:
* Physicians would be nationalized into the Medical Service Corp by draft of some physicians.
* Pharmacies which are retail in nature (such as Rite-Aid, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart Pharmacies, and CostCo Pharmacies) would likely function similar to the retail store in the story.
* Nurses employed by hospitals would likely see no change other than to receive the new payment cards.
People with private medical insurance would likely lose their coverage as an abrupt and unmanaged transition to nationalized single-payer occurs.
This transition to single-payer may actually be helpful to patients who are stuck looking for a commercial HMO authorization. However, for individuals who are in the middle of cancer treatments, hospitalization, or acutely ill; the SHTF scenario could prove fatal.
Restrictions on manufacturing of pharmaceuticals would be affected.
Recently the major vaccine manufacturers have been showing signs of disrupted supply chains. Glaxo-Smith-Kline, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (now owed by Pfizer), Merck, and Sanofi-Pasteur have all had supply issues with their vaccines. The H1N1 vaccine shortages experienced in the time from 10-1-2009 through 12-1-2009 are related to poor management of the vaccine supply lines by the US Federal CDC and HHS.
While the CDC and HHS were not responsible for the manufacturing of the vaccines, the vaccine production and movement into the US bears further examination.
Sanofi-Pasteur’s H1N1 flu vaccine production is said to be HQ’d in France. No H1N1 vaccine production by Sanofi exists for the infant shots. Therefore, the protection of infants six months old to children 3 years of age was being guided by the shipment of products from France. Those vaccine shipments from S-P to the US CDC failed to materialize in 10-1-2009.
We conjecture that the absent shipments were a reflection of the poor valuation of the US Dollar against the Euro. If you compare the USD/Euro ratios by looking at the $TED at stockcharts, you will see that the USD fell against the Euro by 70% from April 2009 to October 2009.
As a result, our nation faced and continues to face shortages of key drugs which are primarily produced outside the United States.
We point out that the USD fell by

Several readers have questioned the preparedness items the government seems to have so ready. And the government isn’t exactly famous for speed in many areas, unless writing a check counts.
But the government has been preparing for “eventualities” ever since the “duck and cover” days. Lots of the planning started back in the 50′s in the event of a nuclear war. With the economy shattered, a new medium of exchange was likely to require introduction. Update that to the credit card system the story outlines. And the jackets are already likely in storage with different colors and plastic panels to stick an official badge/ID into. Those jackets could be part of the Y2K prep, a mass order to a Philippine or Thailand factory from a dummy company and off to government warehouse. Same for the food box labels via some overseas printer. And the 5 days since the crisis began is about the right time to make a boxing run at Kellogg’s with the new labels. Propaganda is important here and this lets folks know where their bread is coming from. The government, all governments, tend to be pack rats. The richer the rat, the larger the pack. And the US government has had a large budget for a long time.
Ever look on the back of all the highway signs and see those decals that are pasted there? Several different colors and designs. Your local Department of Transportation may have a explanation, but probably not (mine couldn’t say). So what are those for anyway? Route coding probably, but to where and for what? Well, move along citizen, nothing to concern yourself with there.
Personally I have labeled the current age The Age of Corruption. But it is subtitled The Age of the Magician. Nothing is as it seems. Lies are denied and denied again until something else comes along and then down the Rabbit Hole goes the original crime. For you see, it is possible to fool a lot of people a lot of the time. Washington seems to have gotten so good at it they even start to fool themselves.
I took a quick look at FerFals blog. In one response he cautions against being a constant doom and gloomer. There is merit in that attitude. But suppose one was a gloomer just before the terror of the French Revolution? Or, like in the movie The Pianist, before Germany took Poland? Or when Mao came to power in China? Stalin in Russia?
There are times in history when gloomer is just another name for realist or visionary. Does a currency crisis for the reserve currency of the planet in an all fiat world qualify with the other 4 I mentioned?
Stay tuned. Each day we get a bit closer to finding out. Rather like waiting a week for the next episode in the blovel isn’t it? I can live with being a gloomer. Pretty sure I wouldn’t want to be a drone, a lackey or one of the would-be masters. Which leaves me another role to play.

JD,PERSPECTIVE AND CALIFORNIA DOCTOR–You guys are dead on what some of the problems we will encounter. If you are not prepared to sit in one place, protect your group and ride this out, then you could be in some serious trouble. Everyone needs to re-read the info about going thru a gate and onto someone’s land. THIS WILL GET YOU KILLED QUICKLY! Folks on the farm will not take kindly to anyone trepassing since they will not expect any assistance whatsoever from any law enforcement or military personnel. They will have their own law and if it disagrees with what you think the law should be, well, thats too bad for you. Expect people in the country to put a gun on you the second they see you or before you see them. Dont think for one minute that the people you see are the only ones there either. If you have one gun on you dont be surprised there is another half dozen or more hiding in the woods with their scopes cross hairs on your chest. Farms have dogs and they are better at spotting you than humans. When the dogs bark, it will elict a response from someone with a gun. Their patience will soon evaporate after 1-2 attempts of someone trying to steal from them. If you are attempt number 3-4 or later you can be assured that you have probably seen your last days on this earth. Again, we mean no one any harm, but myself and many more people across America will do what we have to do to protect our families and our property from theft or destruction. @CT2010: You asked how this plays out in an apartment/urban setting. I asked the same question several chapters back and as far as I know, no one responded with a solution, even an implausible one, on how to survive in a major metropolitan area. Perhaps you (since you are the one affected) might go back and read the comments from the previous chapters and report back to us if someone posted a solution. John closes the chapters for comments after awhile (comments closed through and including Chapter VIII as of now) so it isn’t an open ended task.
So I’ll make you, or any other reader, this offer: Go back and check the comments for how to survive in a metro or suburban area. Report back on which chapter and what was said that applies. Do that and I’ll give you my suggestions on what the urban/suburban household could do, today. Your time is quite probably getting very short right now. The solutions are not going to be optimal as time is limiting your choices. But there are choices. This is known as the barter system. I get to gage how interested you are in actually doing something in exchange. Others might chime in if they see you are serious. You still get to decide if any of the ideas are worthwhile.
A final note: John G. has outlined several instances of how he sees major metro areas going. Maybe not all at once, but by day 5 (February 25, 2010) in the series, he has had:
-Washington DC under martial law (Part 1, February 22, 2010, 0600 EST) by presidential directive.
-All major interstates blocked to stop looters, a bank riot in Buffalo, the bridge to Canada shut, and the waterway closed and patrolled by the Coast Guard (Part 8, February 24, 2010, 3:40 PM EST).
-“ As he shut the garage door, he looked off to the Northwest towards Atlanta, only to notice a very weird red glow over the horizon, like a forest fire had begun somewhere. “; which is Atlanta burning. (Part X, February 24, 2010, 11:05 PM EST)
-A military junta takes over Mexico, declares martial law and closes the border to the US. (Part XI, February 25, 2010, 06:58 AM EST).
-The Little Rock incident is first mentioned (Part XI, February 25, 2010, 07:05 AM CST).
-North Dakota is under statewide martial law (Part XII, February 25, 2010, 07:07 AM CST).
John G. also said, in the intro to Part IX: “The story is based on places, people, events past-present-future, and interpretations as I think they might actually occur. Sadly, our society is under the false assumption that “it can not happen here” and other such nonsense. There is nothing further from the truth. The problem is that we could erupt into either extreme of massive compliance or a “Jericho” style ending. In my opinion, it is a middle ground sort of event where in some regions all hell breaks loose, in others you get the “Yes Mr. Obamabushbernankecramer, your word is God’s will” type of sheeple response.”
So what will your areas’ response be? Well, that’s a bit of the luck of the draw though I would guessimate that any area with a large, concentrated welfare class is going to do poorly. The conditions in Atlanta are replicated in all the large US urban areas. Maybe a weather event locks down a certain area, postponing civil unrest, for a while. And though this story starts in winter, different things, in different order, could happen for the other seasons. But the overall outcome is the same. The worst time for a currency crisis to hit would be the fall, before the year’s crops are in (my opinion).

@Federale, there is a scene, in Raiders of the Lost Arc I believe, which shows where the government put the Arc of the Covenant. It is a government warehouse filled with acres of large wooden crates stacked high. These warehouses dot the country, many of them at our military bases. The tooling to stuff boxes and cans, label them, exists at the current food factories. There are standard size cans and boxes in this industry and the machine does not care what it says on the outside of the box, only that the box or wrapper is a certain dimension so it can go through the existing machinery.
This, and John G.’s story, presupposes the government actually anticipates a currency crisis, at some level. For the political watchword is: “Never let a good crisis go unused”. This is, I think, a crisis easy to see coming. Of course the government will try to take advantage of it. Or not if they really are as dumb as rocks.

Again I honestly believe you have seriously missed the mark,FEMA and the OES? Please give me a break the country will melt into food and race wars, Militates and Patriot groups will rise against the federal government. Several states may very well split from the union and we will face open civil war throughout much of America.
While some government types might try to reg ester and eventually confiscate peoples weapons there will be blood in the streets before that happens. Local law enforcement will not try it without heavy military backing and even then there will be stiff resistance. I served for 30 years in the Army and saw a great deal of conflict in my time, my men would follow my orders and I would never act against the American People. plus many are unfortunate enough to reside in municipalities requiring weapons registration already, which we already know leads to confiscation.

There are 3 types of knowledge: Things we know for certain; things we know for certain that aren’t so, and everything else there is to know but we don’t have a clue about. John G. is writing a FICTIONAL account of how a currency crisis starts in America (in the world actually, since America issues the reserve currency of the planet). The triggering event that John outlines is only one of many that are possible.
What is certain, to me at least, is that a currency crisis will occur. My certainty here is based on all the currency debasement schemes that have occurred in history. All have blown up and ended badly. Up until this point in history, a currency crisis was confined to one country or a group of countries that tried to inflate their way to prosperity. These countries either issued more and more currency and destroyed the moneyness of money or diluted the gold and silver content of their coinage so more coins could be issued for the same quantity of gold and silver, achieving the same end. But money should be rare otherwise it isn’t worth much. Which is why sand is not money and never has been.
The closest situation to today is when Rome, then the whole known world (from the Western perspective), started the money dilution process. It took centuries, but the politicians (and banksters) got the job done. What followed the Fall of Rome was the Dark Ages (again for the West). China and India didn’t fall because Rome fell. They had their own independent problems (and currencies).
But today, with the whole world a fiat system, different colors and sizes and names depending on the country, but all fiat, all backed by nothing more than government promises, this is the first time a worldwide currency crisis probably will occur. I say probably since a miracle could occur. And if a world currency crisis does occur, one of the outcomes could be Dark Ages II, the worldwide edition.
But people don’t study history. So they don’t learn from history. They don’t study economics either, and so they are easily defrauded. Many neither think or work but still expect to be fed. Things are so far out of whack, at so many levels today, that the first thing I do when I wake up is see if the world fell apart while I was asleep.
So I suppose one can debate whether the army will or won’t do that. Or debate if Japan’s policy will be to call in all the debts immediately. Or this event will occur at this or that time into the crisis. But is there really a debate on if we are going to have a currency crisis? I’d like to hear points on why such a crisis won’t occur.
If the debate concedes a currency crisis occurs, time indefinite, but soon (less than 5 years, more than 1 hour from now), then we can start talking about what that actually means. There is the global level to consider. There are the national levels to consider. And there are the personal levels to consider. Each level connects and interacts with the others. For certain (for me anyway) I don’t see the outcome being good. Living standards for large sections of the planet are going to fall. In some areas, where standards are at subsistence level, there is no room to fall. Any fall at all results in a Biafra moment. Many areas today think they are far from those conditions. And they are correct, for today.
Now the question becomes, how far from a Biafra moment are they during a worldwide fiat currency crisis? At the personal level, your inventory of goods and the means of production potentially buys you time. Time that a person with no inventory does not have.
The most destructive attribute of a currency crisis is the direct impact on commerce. As commerce shrinks, the world gets poorer. Those that don’t produce get poorer the fastest. How long it takes our world leaders to slow the fall in commerce, then stabilize it, then grow it, directly translates into how far, and for how many, living standards will fall.
Given the current crop of leaders, I think the risk is great for a long, hard fall. Then, if some make it through to pass along how and why things used to work so well, a Renaissance II might occur. But that gets us far ahead of the story here, where we are only 5 days into the crisis.
Just trying to maintain a little Perspective.

Hey John, When does the incompetent politicans start flying into the area for their photo op’s, getting in everyones way and diverting much needed resources that could be used better elsewhere come into play in your story?
How many days has it been in Haiti and still they cannot get the airport open and running getting much needed supplies to the people. Their stupidity is now getting more people killed.
This earthquake is going to make Hurricane Katrina look like a walk in the park. Disaster after disaster and they still cant get it right.
When the bad times come, you will have no one to help you but yourselves. Can you non-believers see that now? PREPARE FOR IT!

John:
Great story! Gripping, scary, and reeeeeal.
I EXPECT stupidity and blame from the Obama Admin. He is Ray Nagin, with a law degree and teleprompters. This is why the dollar’s recent dive (powered by the Treasury Dept.) and the plausibility of your Newsfeeds had me literally shaking for the first 4-5 installments. The whole probable reality of this situation is why I had so much difficulty reading Ann Rynd.
But then Real Reality set in, and your timeline proved more and more implausible. Nobody makes jackets any more in the USA, and unless they are already stockpiled in a warehouse somewhere, it’s a long boatride from China. AFTER the contracts are signed, the terms are finalized.
The Federal Employees that would have to “adapt to change” (and distribute the jackets!) are all unionized, and so they wouldn’t ever be at work on a weekend. Or work overtime, ever!
Obama can’t command a military (6 months for more troops in Afgh?). He CERTAINLY can’t do it with precision, as your account would have us believe. Joe Biden is a long-winded hindrance, not a help.
Well-scripted black males would have to be seduced from college during Spring Break first, then hired and trained and clothed and sent out and managed. After being convinced that they should work under combat conditions, for Gov’t pay. The Gov’t wouldn’t even have its head out of it’s backside in the first week. So there’s logistics issues involved.
Arkansas Nat’l Guard is still more about protecting the citizens than following orders from the Feds. Nobody wants to resort to violence or go against a local preacher in this region. This is the South, after all, and the preacher isn’t black. (Did I just say that?) Despite 13 months of Yo-Bama, they are absolutely still clinging to their guns and religion in Pine Bluff.
[Now, if it were the New Jersey Nat'l Guard in Arkansas, I'd believe it. But New Jersey wouldn't deploy that far in less than 4-5 months.]
The Arkansas doctor on a “fishy” list? And then his home ransacked? So soon? Consider for a second the Underwear Bomber fiasco, and the inability for the Feds to do anything on a weekend. You’re moving much too fast. Obama can’t even fire the people in his own administration, much less go witch-hunting on a Southern white man. What would Mike Huckabee say?
There are 250 million guns in the US. The chance that these owners could all be seen, individually, each by a live person, in a week, is zero. I can believe that somehow the people in your tale are all the first people in their community to be “Censused,” but it’s still quite a stretch.
I remember an apocalypse-genre book from the 70s-80s called “The Fall of New York,” or some such nonsense. I considered it to be the kernel for Will Smith’s Legion movie. It could give you good pointers on timeline/chronology.
The only nefarious group that could POSSIBLY keep up with such a “to do” list in a time crunch is Blackwater. So Mega-Kudos for bringing them in. Unfortunately for your future book, you’ll have to introduce the character that will Fight the Power (and face down Dick Cheney at the climax of the story) really, really soon in order to have time to develop the character.
A civil war, starting from the Utah/Idaho separationist region? quite a possibility.
Oh. and Finally,
Pastor Lewis “peeked,” not “peaked,” out of the back of the truck. That’s why I commented.
Keep rockin’ the boat!

John: This has been a great story, I find your tale entirely plausible, obviously taking at least some of your commenter s outside of their comfort zone and waking up others. We are trying to do the same thing from the Pacific North West. Concentrating more on the Liberty side, reminding everyone that freedom is a lifestyle defined ONLY by the boundaries of the 10 Commandments or the Golden Rule. Having conservative values and living principles of good character are necessary, standing up for Judea-Christian moral values are a must, these merits are the bedrock of our Constitution. This is the place we must return if we are serious about restoring this nation.
The 10th amendment must be asserted, federalism with robust states’ rights, small and limited government at all levels. State sovereignty is alive in the Mountain West, we could lead the way, that is a goal.
Will all of this forestall the coming financial crisis? Not in the least. Citizens who have educated themselves in the conduct of freemen, willing to resist Leviathan in it’s Gargantuan trick of enslaving us(shitting on us), those who have skills that will be needed in a post-collapse society have to stand up.

This seems plausible. I have considered myself a realist. That being true I often look at best case and worst case scenario’s. Gradual decline vs. sudden collapse. I find it hard to know or imagine what and how a sudden colapse would work out. So reading fictional stories like this give insight as to what can happen. Actually many of the things happening such as how the governments interact can happen even during a slower more gradual decline.
The history of the actions of the wealthy elite and then looking to the future doesn’t make me well with confidence as to our future.

@Scioto, I was doing a little catch up on the comments myself today. So I take it no one has put up any thoughts on how to survive in an urban area (that’s how I am going to interpret your response).
OK, barter contract fulfilled. Now my 2 cents on what an urban/suburban dweller could do, today, for an event that is getting close. This is not an optimal solution since the time is potentially so short, but better something than nothing.
First a short summation on why I think the cities are just not survivable in a crisis. Water is the number one problem. Apartment dwellers do not have the room to store it or the means to replenish what is used. If the power goes out, or is sporadic, taking the stairs up and down (how many flights?) carrying any type of supplies past all the other floors makes just too tempting a target. Basically, the population density is against you and the building design is such that it is not livable without water and power.
So what to do? First thing is location. Pick a spot (area) that is livable. If you know someone in the country, preposition things there. This means you know those folks well and there is mutual trust. And it means you need to be in region far enough from the city to matter, but not so far that it takes days to drive. Don’t even think about a plan that has you flying out to somewhere remote. The drive needs to be well inside the range of one tank of gas.
Probably most people do not know someone in the country and aren’t quite rich enough for that second home yet. So how do you find a country host? And if you find a country host, what are you going to ask for?
Let’s take the second item first. The host gives you location. That takes care of your first priority. Then, in order, you need shelter, water, and supplies. Shelter, unless your host has a spare cabin to rent, is going to be a trailer. Get a used one, as large and in as good a condition as possible (or fix one up). For water, a stream or pond and a good gravity water filter plus extra filters is next. Supplies include the obvious plus heritage seeds and gardening tools.
Now, finding host suggestions: For the small towns in your drive time radius, seek out the local pastors. Tell the pastor you want to put a trailer on a farm property of a good family and you are willing to pay a small rental. You don’t need utilities, though they would be nice, but you would like a bit of a retreat place from the city to come to once in awhile. You would prefer an elderly couple on a quiet farm. Does he know anyone like that? You need to provide references, preferably from your pastor. You may have to ask a lot of pastors this question. If he does know someone, have the pastor come out with you (or buy a lunch/dinner meeting) so you, your landlord, and the pastor know exactly what is being asked. You can offer to sign a lease for the privilege (price negotiable). You can offer so many hours of labor or a combination of both.
You are buying location. Use the pastor and your sense of people as a landlord integrity check. You don’t want to come out and find you have been robbed. An elderly couple, or a widow, is your best bet. Times are tough and they can probably use the income (paying in cash helps).
At this point I assume you have enough resources for a trailer, supplies (at least 3 months worth, more if possible, whatever your best sense/budget allows). The heritage seeds are your bargaining chips for future food if things really go bad. Do not scrimp in this area and get lots of variety.
If you don’t have enough resources by yourself, perhaps some of the prepper sites like http://www.indianapreppersnetwork.net/ which another poster referenced might have location suggestions in your area and how to contact someone who can solve your location problem.
If the pastors do not lead to a likely location, you could try putting an ad describing what you want (a trailer location site) in the small town papers. Check anyone out carefully, including a visit to the local sheriff’s office. This is chancier for obvious reasons. But you are short of time and options.
Is this something that will fit any city dwellers needs? No, it is not. It is my stab at a quick, best I can come up with solution. How large your family is, what your health or special needs are, a whole range of things might say this plan is not for you. But neither is trying to survive in a city apartment or frankly most suburban houses.
This plan won’t work for all areas of the country either. Las Vegas and LA come to mind. Lack of water for the former and one tank of gas is not enough distance for the latter. Changing jobs in this economy isn’t easy and that is your biggest hurdle for location. So change jobs if you can but location is what you need to solve first.
Perhaps some other posters have other (and better) ideas. Your time is a lot shorter for preparation and I sympathize with this difficulty. I’ve been doing this for almost a decade and I’m still working on things. For instance, in the things I outlined you need, you need to stay warm in the north and that means a wood stove. And retro fitting a wood stove to a trailer. And having a source of wood. And the tools to cut wood. And the physic to cut and haul wood. So make your list and prioritize the things you need. Then start doing them.
Life will be difficult with just your own labor to count on. What you are buying at this point is time to get past the first riots. After that you are going to have to be ingenious. You have your labor, maybe your wife’s and the kids labor to harness. There is work to be done on any farm and you need to earn more than you eat. Not being afraid of hard work is a big plus in tough times.
Well that is my basic quick and dirty suggestion. I’m sure there are other solutions. The more resources you have to work with the better. Oh, and one final thought. You need a bug out plan in place and ready to go when your conditions are met that requires its activation. That means your transport is ready to go at all times and everything you need to get from where you are to where you want to be is on hand. Do not count on going shopping or buying things along the way. You want to get going quickly. Have alternate routes mapped out. Practice the bug out plan.
