Just a reminder….the following is FICTION…..AND the final Chapter….
February 28, 2010 7:30 P.M. Eastern Time, Sarasota, FL-The Slough and the Swamp
Darkness finally fell and it appeared that the traffic situation returned to normal for a Sunday night. “Okay everyone, pile into that County Parks SUV right away. Stash your gear in the back but leave room for one person to cover our rear with a rifle if we get any pursuit. You’ll have to shoot to kill,” I said stating the obvious, “and remember they will shoot back. We have to get as far away from town as we can as fast as we can. I’ll run down into Charlotte County if we can make it and when we run out of gas we’ll plan from there.” Nobody argued, talked, whined or mumbled one solitary word. They knew we were up against the wall and time was not an ally, but an enemy. If we could use the interstate it would be a Godsend but I was going to gamble by having everyone wearing baseball caps and looking like a crew heading out to the Myakka River State Park. If the guards ignored is by the interstate I felt confident I could get to Charlotte County and into the Babcock Refuge and buy us another day of life.
The interstate off Clark Road was closed of course with barricades blocking the path but the route to State Highway 72 was wide open. No guards. No checkpoint, nothing. “I wonder if they are all in town looking for us around the mall?”, one of the wives said. My wife looked at me and turned around to her, “I guarantee it. I’m listening to the radio and they have rounded up half our neighbors for questioning. I am sure by now they have ratted us out and that is why we don’t see any traffic. I’m glad we lied to them about where we were going. They were going to rat us out to save their sorry hides, you watch and see.” I looked over at her and said, “Turn that up and I will hold off listening to our fearless leader until the top of the hour. I can not believe we have a shot at making it through to Charlotte County. Everyone is so pre-occupied with the President it is as if the world is shutting down for one more night to see what he says.” My wife turned the UHF radio up and sure enough there was another report of an attack on a Home Guard outpost, this time in Manatee County causing them to put choppers up into the air to help hunt down the perpetrators.
“John, I just thought of something,” one of the men in the back said, “didn’t the county put GPS into all of these trucks?” The screeching sound of brakes caught everyone off guard as I slammed the vehicle to a stop and yelled, “You’re right, everyone out! Start to find the antenna for this vehicle ASAP, I’ll head under the hood, two of you look on the roof!” The engine was off now but barely cooled down as I had been running it hard. I grabbed the flashlight and started looking then one of the wives yelled out, “Got it! It’s up here on the roof!” I slammed the hood down and one of the other neighbors who used to work in a car dealership’s shop said, “No big deal. I can cut it out.” He whipped out a large hunting knife, pried up the cover and started slicing wires, tossing the antenna assembly into the swamp. “Too bad we couldn’t keep the unit active,” he grinned, “I would love to see them tracking a gator.” I looked around at everyone and realized what he just said and then reached into my pocket and pulled out my cell phone and turned it on. “Everyone, grab your cell phones, turn them on and throw them into the muck!”, I yelled, “I forgot they can track these also!” Everyone reached into back packs, pockets and purses and started turning on their various devices and throwing them into the muck. “That was close, if they had wanted to, they could have nailed us,” I started to say, “but we are not out of the woods yet.” My wife sneered at me and said, “There you go again, stupid pun man.” That broke the mood and everyone laughed, piled back into the SUV and we started heading east again. The President would be on in ten minutes and I wanted to get some real estate behind me while he was chattering away.
February 28, 2010 7:46 P.M. McRae, GA – The Town Square
The gathering of folks was getting larger as almost every male in town had arrived via their pickup trucks or walked down the street. It was a diverse crowd, black, white, Latino, yet that did not matter. Almost everyone in town was suspicious to find out if there were any Home Guard types around after the stories from the other communities started to circulate. The abuses would not be tolerated here and Tom was thankful for this. “When the President begins to speak, everyone assigned a guard post, head there now. I want those roadblocks in place no matter what,” the voice of the County Sheriff echoed out on a megaphone. Everyone got quiet and dozens of men who were pre-screened took their rifles and radios to move into position. This was truly the time that tried men’s souls.
“Seven minutes, seven minutes” the voice bellowed out, “everyone get into position immediately.” I noticed two snipers moving up on top of city hall, one man with a spotting scope scanning the horizon and some people putting sand bags up around a small doorway near the entrance to the sheriff’s office. “Are we looking for a war or just what?”, I asked out loud. The guy next to me, a seventy-something year old black man grabbed my wrist and looked me in the eyes, “They are looking for it. We just want to live like we always have. This isn’t my America and I want you to know if I die tonight, I’m sorry I voted for the man. They sold me out.” I patted the old guy on the back and a deputy came over to us, “Follow me, we have a position we need you two to guard.”

Mike was a very unhappy camper. The group was heading West to put his friend’s semi into position with a truckload of explosives to take out the I-20 bridge over the Mississippi if need be. The rest of the men were heading into a meat grinder, to hold the town of Monroe against an armored battalion coming up from Fort Hood with two more battalions of Mexican Army regulars reinforcing them. It was a hopeless battle but it was what Mike wanted to do, die for his nation, not run. Tim knew that that it would not end well and told Mike in their meeting, “I need the children saved and you are truly the only man I would trust.”
Mike turned the radio up as he crossed the border via the back roads into Alabama heading slowly into the town of Okatuppa near the crossroads where his escort was due to meet him. “Children, stay quiet. This bus is hard enough to drive and President Meathead is getting ready to speak and we WILL all listen to it together,” Mike yelled out. The kids all calmed down and settled into their seats, waiting anxiously to hear what was said and to watch the reaction of Mike who was the most stressed adult they had ever seen. The children had been through a lot, watching their parents arrested, some heading into combat, others coming back wounded. It was what Mike called the Stress-Escape Bus Ride and the children needed to escape but Mike could not. He checked is shotgun and his pistol to insure the safeties were on and then turned the bus off of the road onto a side road, leaving it idling in the darkness, waiting on his contact. He turned the radio up and just sat and listened to what would be announced about his future and the nation’s.

Wendy was as excited as she ever could be. Here she was at her boss’s exclusive viewing party where suddenly there was no rationing, no shortages, nothing but excess. “Ah, Ms. Listels, we are so pleased to see you could make it, “Candy said in a slightly tipsy voice, “I am so happy that you could enjoy the nice life. You did such a good job on those applications, you probably will get a promotion. You have no idea how please the Home Guard officers are with you, they just adore you and your work!” Wendy blushed and replied to Candy, “How did you find that out? I just finished the work this morning in secret so the official stamps could be applied in the morning.” Candy laughed, “I’m in charge of everything now, I am the new boss. The old one was linked to one of those groups founded illegally to usurp the government, the Tea Partiers or 911 groups or whatever the hell they were called. That is so,” she stumbled a bit in her high heels spilling her drink everywhere then continued, “so, so, so yesteryear. We are now a world member and that is all that counts. You might just get a promotion out of this sweetie. See me in the morning. Maybe I can set you up to process reports for me and get us more money so I can have bigger parties!”
Wendy thanked her and was stunned. She walked over to the bartender and handed her D-Card to him and said, “Can I have a Cosmo please, make it a double.” The bartender scanned her card and laughed, “You still use this thing? Get yourself a DA baby, you won’t have to wait then and I can scan you from across the room. It’s much more secure.” As the bartender started mixing her drink she noticed other people waving their wrists over a metal obtrusion attached to the register and ringing up their drinks automatically. It spooked her at first then she realized they had that some sort of implant that she had only heard about in science fiction and some interdepartmental memos for those employees who had to go to the Academy for assignments. Just as her drink was handed over to her, Candy took to the front of the room and yelled out, “Everyone, hush! Be quiet and I mean that, right this minute! The President is about to speak so the bar is closed until he finishes.” She pointed to the bartenders who covered their registers and their scanners and then pointed to the screen were CNN-VOA Domestic Services had their logo emblazoned with a counter that said ten seconds were remaining.
Sunday February 28, 2010 8 P.M. Eastern Time, The Speech
Radio and television sets worldwide heard the following, “Ladies and Gentleman, the President of the United States of North America.”
President Obama approaches the podium in the White House and begins to speak:
“My fellow citizens of the world, a lot has happened in the seven days since the old currency collapsed due to an attack by financial thugs who attempted to destroy our nation. Well, as your President, I am happy to report that their efforts have failed and soon the United Nations of this world, those who believe in freedom and have discarded the dying ideals of a failed society will emerge stronger than ever, lifting all boats, including those world citizens who now reside in what is left of the former United States.
The reason I submit to all of you that the problems we have witnessed this past week are those of the past does not matter. I am looking forward to the future. My predecessor, President Bush, foresaw the need for preparations and put into place a frame work for the establishment of the new currency regime, the changing economic situation we were facing, and the need for stronger domestic security resources to insure national stability. For these acts I must thank the Bush and Cheney administration profusely for their foresight, which indeed gave me the tools necessary to deal with a crisis which was unexpected, yet manageable thanks to the prompt action of our Treasury Department under Secretary Geithner and the brilliant planning and execution of Ben Bernanke at the United States Federal Reserve. Thank you again for a job well done and even though it is not complete, the new World Reserve Bank is well under way to becoming operational and with your participation, economic stability can not and will not be far behind.
The National State of Emergency Declaration remains in place until further notice. As I have said before, it is my hope to suspend the SOE within ninety days but some of the more onerous oversight requirements on some of the states can and will be suspended effective at Midnight tonight for the states given full clearance to resume normal, independent operations. Each state will have a Federal and State elected governor, working together side by side as the Constitutional Convention will codify the changes that have been implemented officially on April 3, 2010. These changes were part of the deal that was constructed by our diplomatic team under the able leadership of Secretary of State Clinton working with our economic team under the guidance of Ben Bernanke. The NAFTA treaty has now been dissolved and replaced with the Unification Treaty of 2010, which was officially adopted at the last meeting of the G-7 in Northern Canada several weeks ago. This treaty satisfied the obligations of the G-20 accords in 2008 and created a satisfactory currency regime which allowed President Bush and myself to stabilize the financial system and insure the United States would continue to function as a practical entity in the world economy.
I wish also to thank Ben Bernanke for abolishing the FHLB and absorbing the regional units and their assets into the new Federal Reserve Banking system for each state, whereas the assets and oversight will be moved from a smaller control basis over to the individual state banks which now have voting powers within the Federal Reserve system. I have instructed the Congress via Speaker Pelosi to begin drafting regulations which allow each state to hold special elections to insure that the citizens are allowed to vote for Federal Reserve members from their states as well as the appointment of individual Chairpersons which will be accomplished by the governors and Federal Reserve member banks on a six year rotating basis. This should guarantee the independence of our banking system and stabilize the electronic run on our financial system that began last Sunday night. This action is how we have been able to create and implement the conversion from an antiquated paper currency system and to a modern, digital electronic monetary regime. Some enterprising souls have even developed further advances which were already approved by the Federal Reserve and tested in Europe which just goes to show you that innovation is still part and parcel with the American spirit.
Unfortunately, with each major change in world events, the specter of evil raises its ugly, vile head to try to take advantage of the confusion. The thieves, profiteers, and hooligans who think they can steal from our citizens or corporations are being dealt with by the Department of Homeland Security Home Guard units in the harshest manners imaginable and as a result, we will have a major jobs program opening up to expand our prisons ten fold in the weeks to come. I will not tolerate theft from little old ladies like Marjorie Pipkins in Providence, Rhode Island. The DHS Secretary informed of this story and I ordered immediate courses of action to prevent the elderly from being scammed like poor Mrs. Pipkins was when a phony home grocery delivery service decided to try to steal her food and her identity from the D-Card she was so proud to have obtained. These three gentlemen were given twenty years of hard labor and hopefully that will cure and deter others from considering a life of criminal mischief and stealing. I bring this story forward because it is no secret that terrorists have been exploiting the recent confusion also.
When I won the election in 2008, President Bush was more than gracious enough to welcome me into the National Security discussions which included the specter of domestic terrorist activities. Little did I know at that time the severity and gravity of the warnings his team gave mine and the information which was presented. When our economic stability was endangered, it was discovered that not only were groups within our own borders exploiting the situation with wild tales about the end of the United States Constitution or a new world dictatorship beginning, we found out via the hard work of the FBI and Department of Homeland Security under Secretary Napolitano, that indeed elements from Al Queda were supporting, financing and structuring groups to cause disruptions on the ground and forcing the average American citizen to believe that their lives were endangered or at risk needlessly. The threat was so serious, so real and so entrenched in the fabric of our nation that our intelligence sources believe that some of these elements penetrated our National Guard and local Sheriff’s offices at the state level, simply to foment insane ideas about the administration and spread false propaganda about the Home Guard. As a result, we have had to quarantine numerous portions of several states and this map will be made available on the internet via the Department of Homeland Security website, DHS.gov and all major newspaper publications and communications outlets.
The networks have been instructed to flash the maps up on your television screens tonight and as you can see, the areas shaded in red are the regions designated unsafe due to Al Queda and domestic terrorist activity. Those regions will remain under the dictates of martial law until further notice. However the state of Alaska which seems somewhat disproportionate may only be experiencing communications issues due to the harsh winter brought on by the climate change all of us have been experiencing and I expect their state of emergency to be suspended in a matter of days as the weather abates.
I remind everyone, I urge all patriots, I beseech upon all of the people, if you know or suspect a neighbor, a friend, a soldier or law enforcement officer of aiding or abetting the activities of or terrorist plans which have been disrupting the rebuilding of our economic system or interfering with the activities of the Home Guard and National Guard to re-establish order, dial 911 or 999 on any telephone and the response will be immediate. You can also contact the national DHS tip line which is displayed at the bottom of your screens and could lead to rewards for information which breaks up these evil groups attempting to destroy your freedoms and usurp our authority as a Constitutional government.
For those states where you have no issues, no red regions, and a notification that the state of emergency is being lifted, your banks will open tomorrow, your businesses returning to normal and a celebration, a new holiday will be created. Tomorrow is “National Return to Work Day” and I will be wearing the new flag with the red and white stripes and three large starts to signify our new continental unity. Canadian soldiers will be assisting with Mexican soldiers inside of the former borders of the United States to restore order in those trouble regions and if you get a phone call from your boss telling you it is safe, we expect each and every American to get back to work, help us feed, cloth and restart the nation back on to the path of a new prosperity. Your retirements have been protected, your bank accounts guaranteed safe and now you must do what is best for your nation, your freedoms and for the world. It is time to get back to work and as such, I shall do now myself as I meet with Mr. Bernanke and Mr. Geithner to discuss the beginning of the new banking system and the opportunities it presents for all of the citizens in North America.
Good night, God Bless all of you, and long live freedom in the greatest Union on Earth.”
February 28, 2010 8:29 P.M. Middle of Nowhere, Alabama
Two children began to cry in the back of the short bus Mike was driving. “Silence you brats, this is important!”, he yelled back and thus the children sat still and silent fearing this huge old man who was now stressing over what he had just heard. The radio then blared out over a Birmingham station no less, “This is Rick Sanchez with CNN-VOA Radio News and the speech is over, let the debate begin. With us tonight are three experts from the Federal Reserve and two members of the IMF who helped design and draft this new banking consortium which under President Obama’s leadership appears to have saved Western Civilization inside the borders of the old United States…..” Mike turned it over to WSM 650 and found the same tripe. He turned the radio down and saw a signal from an old beat up Jeep Cherokee twenty feet ahead. It was the escort he had been waiting for. “Okay kids,” Mike began as he put the bus into gear, “we’re going camping and meeting some really cool people. If you’re nice, maybe we can meet Yogi Bear or something.” The kids did not sound impressed and one of the older kids just groaned. “Ah well, you’ll be excited when you see this place, it is a lot of fun and you’ll have an adventure every day in school,” Mike yelled out.
As the bus creaked and rambled slowly, Mike realized that the route being taken was still a back road nightmare, avoiding intersections and any possibility of running into the Home Guard clowns or anyone supporting the President’s agenda. After another hour of potholes and massive exercises in shifting up and down, the bus finally turned on Sea Warriors Road near Blandon Springs where the church had set up a nice place for the children to live in the cabins and encampments there. “Sir, I don’t know which warrior you are, but God Bless you,” the reverend said as Mike stepped off the bus and counted the children to make sure he did not forget any. “They are good kids,” Mike said,” but between you and I sir, most are losing their parents tonight and tomorrow. It is not going well out West. Do you have any type of transport available?” The reverend looked over at an old beat up 1978 GMC pickup and said “That’s Billy White Eldrin’s but you’ll have to ask him if you can have it.”
Billy White Eldrin was a forty-seven year old black grandson of a former sharecropper who had just lost everything due to the games the banks played and in his mind, conning him out of his land and his family homestead that had been their since the turn of the 1900’s. He was also quite bitter that the President and nobody seemed to care so when this hulking old white man approached him, he grabbed his twelve gauge clinching it tightly so as to put the fear of God into Mike. Mike looked at him and said, “You ain’t scarin’ me son. I’ve been shot at, shot, lost, stolen from and generally abused for forty plus years now. So if you’re trying to scare me with that shotgun, it ain’t working.” Billy White looked up at Mike and smiled, “So I hears you need a ride. Where ya heading old man?” Mike smiled back and grabbed a smoke out of his coat pocket, “A place where great harm will probably finally finish me, why, you out of options also?” Mr. Eldrin stood up and flicked an old Ronson lighter up to light Mike’s coal, “Sir, it sounds to me like you want to defend what is left. Hop in and tell me where to go, I’ll drive you there and cover your back.” With a shake of their hands and tip of the hat to the reverend, they left this secret encampment knowing full well they would never return. “Head West,” Mike told Billy, “and don’t stop until you see the Mississippi River or a fight we need to get involved in.”
February 28, 2010 9:13 P.M. North Charlotte County, FL near the Babcock Preserve
“I want everyone setting up camp deep on the dry land fifty yards southeast of here. You and you, come with me, we are setting up an ambush. If we want to get into the swamp, we had best be ready to take down the first sucker that sees our truck and get his fuel and ammo plus radios.” Here I was in the middle of nowhere as the fog was rolling in and what’s the first thing I heard back in response from my wife and two of the other women folk? “Honey, are there snakes out here?” I sighed while the men grabbed some brush to cover the truck up and settle in for the night. “Sweetheart, there are plenty of snakes, gators, armadillos, poisonous spiders and God knows what else out here. That’s why we are here,” I said to here trying to control my tone of voice, “THEY don’t want to explore out here either.” The three women ran back to the truck and said they would sleep in there and that ruined the ambush plans for the night.
“Just dang,” one of the husbands said, “now what?” I rolled my eyes and said it plainly, “Time to hike. Grab just enough gear, two of the reflective triangles and one bottle. Fill it up with gas and we’ll used it as a Molotov if we have to. We’re heading to the main road.” Both men nodded and said “Okay John!” The last man looked at me scared as can be and said, “What do you want me to do?” I told him to stay put and guard the women and haul out of there as fast as he could in the morning if we did not return. “Oh, and one more thing,” I said as I started to walk away, “pray for fog.”
The other two men set up twenty yards away from me at a thirty degree angle so as to make it appear that a truck had broken down and left the triangles behind just off of the side of the road. It was a cool night and a long wait was ahead as this was a lightly traveled road in the state. At least that is what we thought until tonight.
No sooner than had I spent an hour in the Palmetto bush I decided to go take a bathroom break. I turned my flashlight on and found a relatively dry spot behind a fallen oak and took care of business but when I returned to the site, I hit the ground hard. There were four Humvees, two with active searchlights looking everywhere for any sign of movement. As I stared down the road, there were my friends, laid out neatly with tarps covering the bodies. “Crap how could I not hear anything?”, I thought to myself. As I started to move a sharp pain hit me in the side and I realized that I had been shot. This wasn’t a Home Guard unit, it was 82nd and they were not playing games. As I dragged myself to the road, I heard one of the men giving a high five to the sniper and yelling, “Well, do we take him in or put him out of his misery?” The officer that I was trying to draw a bead on did not hesitate, “Put him out, he’ll just cause trouble at a later date.” The last thing I remember was my gun being kicked away from my hand and the soldier standing over me as I stared up into what should have been a foggy night. “Head or heart?”, he asked in a matter of fact manner. “Head please, quick, I’m bleeding bad.”
Boom.
February 28, 2010 10:17 P.M. McRae, GA
“Mom, I’m home, tell everyone to stand down,” Tom yelled out as he walked into the front door. Lillian was shocked. “Tom, what happened?”, she asked almost panic stricken. “The Sheriff sent everyone home. He just gave up. He was out gunned and did not want a slaughter,” Tom started to say, “he was sorry that this had to pass but there was no way he was going to lead his town into a suicide mission. The last thing we saw was him heading into his tent with a bottle of whiskey then a single gunshot. Deputy Billings is in charge now and he told us all to go home and get ready for door to door searches tomorrow.”
Lillian began to weep which upset her daughter far more than anyone could have ever imagined. “Honey, calm down,” Tom said, “we’ll figure something out.” She screamed “Where? In a brothel? In a labor camp? I want to kill myself, Momma give me a gun!” Lillian stood up, tears streaming down her face and slapped Sandy as hard as she could. Then she pushed her on the floor and yelled, “I’m not going to watch my family fall apart. Tom, you get sandbags and reinforcements for the front. We’ll go down fighting if we have to. And you young lady, the only way you’ll get a gun from me is if you pry it from my cold dead hands. So get in the kitchen and start tearing liniments and making bandages. Our family is not the only one that will take a stand. Hell, they might not even get out here for two months, or years. So shut up and get yourself together!” Sandy understood it from her Momma if she did not grasp what I was saying. And that put her into a course of action.
“Lillian,” Tom started to say, “if you don’t mind I’m going to go help the rest of your family dig some ditches at the main gate to stop any trucks from getting through. We’ll be setting up booby traps also so please, let us get finished. Can you and Sandy fix some of that good tea and coffee for us? If I’m going to die, I want to taste the good things in life one more time.” Sandy looked at Tom in horror as Lillian gave him a reassuring hug and said, “Certainly my son, I love you, ya know. You’re more of a man than I thought ten years ago, she deserves a fine man like you.” Sandy came over and started to say “Why” but Tom put his fingers on her lips and said, “Not yet. Not until I’m dying. You get to work and I’ll be back here in few hours.”

Wendy was so drunk she was in shock when one of the Congressmen walked into the room with more champagne. “Everyone celebrate, tonight we are free, tomorrow,” the drunken slob started to slur, “we get to declare liberty for all who believe, woohoo!” Candy was still sloshed after the speech and found out that she got a promotion the hard way, with the arrest of her boss for conspiracy to commit wire fraud which in reality was making a loud boisterous boast that the current administration was more corrupt than Rome and his day was coming. The Home Guard never really smiled on events like that, especially live on the local news so Candy now became the General Manager for the Department of Economic Planning and Human Resources for the state of Colorado under the OES.
Wendy walked over to congratulate and toast here but before she could say a word, Candy hugged her and yelled out to the room, “Silencio you drunken bureaucrats! I have an announcement. With my recent promotion I need someone who works hard works like a slave and gets the job done without whining. That means Mike, you’re fired. Wendy, you’re my new Regional Director for Permits and Regulatory Processing for District Seven. Congrats to the youngest and best worker in Colorado gang!”
Wendy was stunned, blushing and now a little buzzed. A little hard work and playing by the rules within the system, or at least learning it has paid off. “God Bless North America!”, Wendy yelled out and everyone screamed the same phrase back as they tipped their drinks into the air.
For now, the government held all the cards, all the freedoms and rationed all of the hope. Wendy was pleased as punch that she learned just enough to pick the right side in her mind in the conflict that had just occurred over the last week. The dollar may indeed have died but a new world was discovered. And that world would guarantee success for those who played by the rules, even if they had no clue what they were. “Ms. Listels, thank you,” the Home Guard rep said, “You’re the greatest!” As she raised her glass up to acknowledge the accolades, Candy smiled and said, “You’ll go far kid, stick with me. We have the nation in the palm of our hands now.”

thanks – good use of what i’m sure was some interesting previous employment experiences! The sad thing is that while this is the best case scenario for how well gov can execute strategically/operationally/tactically – it’s not going to stop them from trying in the most useless ways.
Glad you’re in FL – i went ‘galt’ in jan09.

At some point we all will have to make a choice like our Fathers who gave us this opportunity did. Live(or die)on your feet or suffer on your knees. They gave everything, will you?

Geez John!
How about leaving us just a SMIDGE of hope for goodness sake!!
Very well done, I enjoyed the whole story
You should have someone edit the story for continuity and context, and put it in proper chapter form
I like the concept of having the chapter title on a page by itself, with an appropriate quotation from literature or the Bible
You could also do an introduction, acknowledgement and postscript, maybe even have a noted blogger like Alex Jones or Steve Quayle or other luminary do a foreword
This story needs wider publication, IMHO
There is very little time left for public awareness

I think I will pray for a giant CME from the sun. The patriots could then survive. Have to admit, I thought you would find a way for the good to survive, I was wrong. I think we as a nation are about to be tested shortly. I pray we have a better ending. Thanks for the wake up call.

I’m screwed!
I’ve got to tell you, I hated reading that damn speech as much as I hate hearing Obomination in real live. While reading his speech, I could actually hear his voice in my head! I must be loosing it!!!
And one other thing; and this is something that I’ve been trying to put into words for a few weeks now.
While it is an historic event, a Black man being elected president, it is a shame that this great event was wasted on the likes of Barak Obama – a traitor to this country.
The only historic event that I see here is the fact that so many people in this country have sold their soul to the government and its hand-outs and, the man with all of the promises of salvation for the people will be the same creature that destroys this country, once and for all time!!!
Thanks John Galt, for a great view of the future that is closer by the day.

Somehow I think the red areas on the map would be alot more prolific and would include most all of the States that have already passed or are passing sovereign rights bills.
Also I want to believe that several national guard and military units would switch once foreign troops were allowed in.
At least I hope I am right.

nooooo! it cant end like this. its so sad…
@connor; better hope so, because a NWO isnt my idea of a future.
I think its more likely though that a lot of national guardsmen and army reservists wont show up, preferring to protect their families. Likewise, there may be massed desertions as soldiers either dont want anything to do with the NWO or fear for their families safety.

Congrats on finishing…a first draft. After 35 years in publishing from newspaper work to hardback novels and book club main selections, I can verify that the key to good writing is rewriting. You need to go back and “flesh” this out – literally. There are flat characters and rounded characters and the rounded ones remain too flat.
You were off to such a tremendous start – rivetingly so, in fact, and I shared your site with a lot of people. About the time you suffered a death in the family, I saw your passion for the story “die” a bit, too, and of course the holidays leaves everyone half comatose. It happens, though, in writing book-length fiction a person either hits that area and soldiers on through and resumes…or hits that area and wishes only to be DONE and to do it SOMEhow and have it all over with.
A lot of narrative use. Old rule: “Show don’t tell”. More action and dialogue needed. To make it vivid for readers – “sensual writing” (which some assume is sexual writing, but is NOT – merely uses common sensual experience to make readers experience via sensory perceptions stored in mind-files of memory what they have experienced in: sight, sound, touch, smell, etc. to make action come alive so the reader personally “lives” it in a vicarious manner.)
IMO Stephen King with THE STAND in the shorter version, when they weren’t willing to expend so many pulpwood trees to him, was the first contemporary SHTF novel – and he used plenty of “nasty” and that was years and years ago. Society is meaner nowadays, and every SHTF blovel I’ve read is too damned “nice”, LOL. Then when they released King’s version where they put in what they’d cut out because it was longer than they were willing to devote ink and paper to, it was even more interesting.
I think The Day The Dollar Died is still the best of what has been written on the internet as blovels; I’ve poked around and found much of it. The danger of self publishing yourself unless a person is one helluva self-editor it doesn’t get mangled, mauled, and ripped apart and put back together sufficiently with an editor’s insight. As I always said – an editor demanded the best of an author – made a writer’s work “stand up and sing” and then when it rolled off the presses and was released the author got all the credit.
In the final chapter…well, dead men tell no tales. And the guy did, when he picked a head shot and it was “boom” and “game over”. Could’ve conveyed that with, “It was as if my entire life spun before my eyes as I sagged against the rough ground, feeling helpless as a turtle on its back. My lips felt dry, my tongue cleaved to the roof of my mouth, I almost had to pry it off to utter the words, ‘Head…Please….’ And pinched my eyes tight, praying, and waiting…’
BTW I enjoyed the story about the little girl and her lemonade stand imbroglio. You have a lot of talent, John. I hope you WILL keep on keeping on. I would suggest that in the next effort you use the technique of what we call The Everlasting Present – so ya don’t hem yourself in using dates and times – as I felt that with the calendar and clock bearing down on you you felt an added stick in the eye to finish this puppy before the calendar pages rolled over. And a downside in using actual date and time is that soon history is history…and it doesn’t jibe up.
You are so sharp in so many ways, and so talented. After 35 years in publishing, making a living doing so, I bailed out. As I have told people, “Publishers taught the bankster-gangsters how to do it.” So don’t delude yourself you’ll make money (I know Half-Fast, whose writing certainly is not ‘half-assed’ and he tells an interesting tale) desires that. All you do is give up control and they let you have what dribs of money they feel like and cook the books to perfection. I know Writers Write to be READ and that is why back in the 1970′s my CB Handle was “The Story Teller”. And I recognize you’re another born Story Teller. I never figured out if it was a blessing or a curse…Best always!

I am flattered and honored by this commentary. This is a true first draft and believe it or not, not the best of my works as I have been kicking a novel around for over a year that I don’t dare publish on the internet as I learned from a lawyer quite rapidly; Hollyweird has a propensity to steal, especially if they can get their claws into a work before the copyright returns from Washington, D.C. I appreciate the critique which was both fair and informative. I love telling stories, blending reality with the fictional and the story was going to end this way but the loss of that week did indeed throw me off schedule. This is life when you work numerous hours and attempt to write also. I have several editors working with me and will be selecting one soon to help clean it up and this will be put into a PDF format as soon as practically possible. To be honest sir, I never even knew what a blovel was until someone emailed me and told me to proceed past seven chapters and carry it to its logical conclusion. Thank you again and yes, I shall keep on writing and telling stories to the best of my ability and hopefully dig up a good agent along the way.

Get an agent? Bite your tongue. Great Catch-22 in publishing. Gotta have an agent to get in, gotta be published to get an agent. I’d sooner pick out a Mail Order Bride than go back and get involved and get an Agent. They tend to pursue authors like a randy teenager wantin’ to get into a sweet young thing’s panties, and when you’ve signed on the contractural line – fuggedaboutit. Lazier than homemade sin and in the case of what YOU write they could serve an integral part in keeping it buried.
I felt you ended the book faster than your gut instincts might’ve guided you w/o the Feb. date bearing down hard and fast. We ALL thrive on hope.

I spent several years serving with the 82nd Airborne Division. Most of the people I know/met who served in the 82nd were very patroitic and believed in the statement “to protect the US against all enemies both foreign and domestic.” Even back then we had many discussions on what would constitute a domestic threat. Having served 20+ years in the military I have a difficult time believing that all active forces, especially the 82nd, would automatically follow the President in eliminating the Constitution. The oath we take and out allegiance is to protect the Constitution and this nation and not to any single individual serving as President of the US.

Perhaps the ending should not be so unexpected… Our country men & women have fallen from the ideals of our ancestors and the principles of Liberty that our country was founded on. Though saddened by the ending and the 82nd-Fort Hood betrayal of their oaths, my life lesson from reading this is to keep doing what I was doing – beans, bullets, and bandages. The most difficult part of the story was the lack of organization Americans had to respond, at least at the individual level the story relates with.
Contrary to the brilliant – get off your arse – moral lesson of this story, there are militia, national guard and active military, and even generals in the Pentagon (if any left after the invasion of Iraq) who will mount a counter-move to these extra-constitutional powers that CEO Obama takes to satisfy his shareholders (banking elites). No matter what active army brigade comes in, there will be men & women to rebel and fight back.
My faith is in this belief.

Thanks for the moral lesson that builds character…

Just read the remaining chapters to your blovel “The Day The Dollar Died.” I have to be honest I am somewhat disappointed that the resistance to the NWO is not showing any signs of success at the end. We, as readers, are left wondering if they were at least able to blow up the bridge across the Mississippi to stop the advance of the Feds …ooops sorry.. I mean North American Union troops. And, honestly, as a native New Yorker, I can tell you that most of Upstate NY would riot if they were told that the Constitution was being usurped. I can not imagine no red area for that part of NYS. I do hope you write a sequel to TDTDD so that we can at least have some ray of hope on the horizon. Perhaps, a reconstituted Congress of patriots can convene and vote to impeach Obama and try him for treason. Or better yet, a rogue military unit allied with the resistance gets their hands on a suitcase nuke and brings it to Washington D.C. to really let the party begin!!! Sorry John, but I and I am sure many others need to at least see that there is some hope for our nation to return to its Constitutional foundation.

Great Story, Thankyou. I liked the ending for the lesson it teaches me. We, unlike those in the story, have time. Do not act hasitly, but act. This nightmare has been a long time coming, and it will neither begin in earnest, nor end in tragedy, tommorrow.
Bring the troops home now too. Spill no more patriots blood on foreign shores. We need the patriots here. Back home. NOW. “As the warrior Sage Hillel, once said, “if not now, then when?” The Sword of the Sage. Ben Zoma (Avot 4:1)

RWeaver, sorry ol’ buddy if I accidentally offended you on John’s behalf. Not my intention. If you knew how much ink has rolled before my eyeballs all those years, you’d be aware that I know John “has what it takes” to make it – BIG! As a writer, and most of my friends wordsmiths, also, I’d seen the reality many-a-time of how someone with a compassionate critique can save an author a lot of wheelspinning.
At the moment this is a labor of John’s love – and evidence of his caring for humanity – which IS why most writers DO write. So, gang, keep the comments going so John is at least “paid” in the realm of what you have to say about his works until something can go “clink” in his bank account.
Generally, believe me, writing is a LONELY business – certainly how it was PRE-internet. And it is comments and responses and reactions and affirmative and encouraging words that keep an author going.
Comments of the tenor of the gang here are the type to encouage and inspire an author, even if the ones a bit disappointed in the ending. That was often something many of us had beaten into our heads by editors was not to let our natural dourness and doom-sayer bents of mind win out and we often had to reshape the endings to offer at least a modicum of ‘hope’.
For never having written a book before, and having the cajones to do so and upload it, trust me: we’ve witnessed major new talent and not only THAT but John seems to be a prodigy in spinning fiction.

Mr. Author, I would tend to be in agreement with Mr. Hack on this one. It could be “fleshed out” into a novella or short story, with a little more emphasis on the the feeling of the moment, from the character’s perspective, giving the reader just a little bit of insight into their thoughts, motivations, histories and so forth. Just enough to make them people. The fact that Mr. Hack read your “blovel” – I HATE that word for some reason! – is pretty indicative that he is on the right page. This internet is the new Guttenburg press – an equalizer!
As for the story – yuck! And by yuck I mean you hit a chord, kinda like a vocal chord with a roundhouse kick to the throat. OUTSTANDING! I love being left with something to ponder, and there is a lot here. I believe that we are in agreement, as most people do not realize what is in place now and JUST HOW QUICKLY thinks can change. Keep writing!

RWeaver, ol’ bud, sorry if you took offense on behalf of John. Last thing I wanted, for sure, for sure. I only bothered because I see sooooo much talent and the necessary stictuitiveness to make it BIG in publishing if a few lucky breaks are also forthcoming. Most of my friends were also writers and many-a-time we critiqued one another’s work – and saw how someone who understood the techniques and tricks of fiction writing could with a few words of compassionate critiquing shorten the journey to success. I could tell that John had what I coined as a Three-D personality, which in preenting seminars around the nation to peers I translated as: Drive, Determination & Discipline. And also warned that successful authorship was 98% perspiration and 2% inspiration. IMO John has it ALL.
The fact that this was his first novel is EXtremely impressive. That he had the cajones to upload it for public consumption is remarkable and provokes awe at the self-courage driven by a story-teller’s persona. Learning it was a first effort explains the somewhat ‘dark’ ending. As newby types most of us naturally segued into some unhappily-ever-after endings until we were repeatedly beaten over the heads by commercial editors hired by the publishers, who nagged us that readers didn’t like downer/depressing endings, so we were cautioned and “trained” to at least give some glimmers of hope in the ending. It’s just a fact of life, frankly. Reality is grim enough that in fiction, especially what readers are literally payin’ to read, they want to walk away with some ‘hope’.
At this stage it is a labor of love for John. Trust this ol’ dawg: writing novels was some lonely, lonely territory, especially pre-internet. Hours and days of being alone before a keyboard and as they used to say “opening a vein” and pouring your story-telling life’s blood all over the page (or the terminal screen as it were in this case.)
So keep the comments coming – for in that way it can encourage and edify John until the day comes when he has something to jingle in the pocket and swish in his wallet. There are some very bright people aboard John’s blog and he can be encouraged and edified by comments. So please keep ‘em coming. Frankly, until he’s “better paid” that is all he has is the reactions of those of us who have read and eagerly awaited what he was good enough to share with us.

I’m always amazed at americans worried about foreign troops in their country. the entire canadian forces army, navy and airforce including reservists are about 95,000 in number. Mexico has roughly 180,000 men in the army.

The first half of this story was very intriguing and enjoyable, but somewhere around the middle you took a turn for the excessively weird and implausible. If you want to scare people you have to stay within the realm of the believable. Ask us to suspend belief on too many points, and you’ll lose us — which you did me.
I say this as a no-longer-active Marine, who doesn’t believe one minute that most of the military *isn’t* a spiritual member of the Oath Keepers (if not in deed). We all know damned well what the oath we swore was, and it wasn’t to a North American Union, the United Nations, or any other horse crap organization.
As an Alaskan resident, you might as well make the entire freaking state red, too. Don’t think for a minute that the feds could even take Anchorage. They’ve got an Army *&* and Air Force base in city limits. And they’re still out-gunned.

It was not the ending I would have liked to see, but realistic. Most revolutions fail. Usually the government is too powerful and has the military on its side.

A thought provoking read! Well done.
I am well prepared for a natural disaster or a man-made disaster such as nuclear war, an EMP blast, even a deadly disease. I am prepared for a lack of government and a fall of civilization. I am not, however, prepared for a coup by our own government. But this has motivated me to get prepared for such an eventuality. I hope that I am not alone in taking The Day the Dollar Died as a call to action.
Were a financial collapse to strike — and I agree that this is a strong possibility — let us hope that the government is less well prepared, less coordinated, and more confused than in this series. Let us hope they have not learned from Katrina and that there is little or no coordination between federal, state and local governments. Let us hope that governors and states resist federal incursions into their rights and responsibilities. And let us hope that the crisis in the big cities takes all the attention and man power of the usurping government and the small towns and rural areas survive untouched, or at least have a window of time to observe, organize, decide and act.
But just in case times like these are closer than we wish and the government is more prepared than we hope, each freedom-loving, constitution-honoring American should make their plans and draw their personal line in the sand now while they are thinking clearly and not under duress.
What would you do if they declared a bank holiday, a state of emergency, or martial law? How would you object if they tossed out the Bill of Rights, searched homes without a warrant, imprisoned people without a trial, arrested people for speaking their minds or owning a gun, tried to dictate the prayers you must say, or prevented you from meeting with friends or driving on a public highway? And if you did object, how would you object? At what point would you cross the line between verbal complaints and real action? Would you make a stand, or would you give in without a fight?
Ask yourself: Would you be like the German citizens who allowed concentration camps to operate in their towns? Or would you be like the French Resistance who fought back while their country was occupied. Would you trade comfort and safety while turning a blind eye for the risk of doing what is right?
Read this again, all 25 chapters. Think. Worry. Plan. Prepare. Don’t let it happen here.

Thanks John for a great story and for inspiring me in two ways. First, to prepare more thoroughly, in my heart, my head, my soul, and my home for the troubles looming on the horizon. Second, to devote more time to pursue my own writing aspirations. I write grants for non-profits, newsletters, and essays. Had a few things published but mostly I write just to express myself when I feel driven to get it out. I want to make a difference in my community and writing is one of the ways I hope to accomplish certain goals. Living here, outside of the Ft. Hood area and being an 8yr

If you do “flesh this out” as old hack stated, you will have problems with “believability” in your position of active duty troops taking part in this madness. I know you understand this and the possabilities in character/storyline development alone could be a novel. Alas though John, I worked the streets many years before the military and watched the police officers that I worked with slowly turn into mean, hardened thugs with no respect or even temperdness, so, you had the HG pegged for sure as the belligerent thugs they were so who the hell knows. I’ve read the entire series since the first chapter was posted, but refrained from commenting until now. A very good, unfortunately plausible, story! While I agree that further development would make this into a great story, it definitely puts across the serious nature of the times in which we live, and the all-too-real dangers we face as individuals, and as a nation, from unaccountable financial institutions and an out-of-control, unconstitutional government. Thanks for taking the time out of your life, amidst personal tragedy no less, to see this project through to its conclusion.
One thing in the last chapter that struck me as particularly rushed, mentioned by Old Hack, was John’s demise. Perhaps a short scene after his last thoughts, involving the discussion/actions of the soldiers postmortem, would be an appropriate cap on his exit. Just a thought.
Again, thank you for your efforts. While I hope to see an expanded and refined version of the story in the future, I pray that I never see it in real life.

Dear “John”,
Boy – that’s almost funny, isn’t it?
I feel it’s OK to say “dear” because you’ve become a daily part of my life for these past weeks. Though I too dislike the ending – and honestly think it’s a bit off – I understand why you wrote it the way you did.
Here’s the thing…
In 1941, the jap Admiral said “I fear we have awoken a sleeping dragon.” A jap General – explaining why they didn’t even consider trying to invade CONUS – said “We’d find a rifle behind every blade of grass.” Much has changed in the lifetime since those fateful times, but the number of rifles in our Republic really hasn’t – it’s actually increased. Sure – it’s lower on a per-capita basis because we have so many more people – but there are literally hundreds of millions of weapons in private hands.
Further, the “instant-check” system has processed over a million purchases per month since last November’s elections. Ammo was essentially unavailable for months, and the shelves are still pretty bare – over a billion rounds of ammo were sold in 2009. Primers especially are also being hoarded – every store in my area gets a small shipment weekly and they’re gone before the delivery-truck leaves the lot.
Bottom line: There are a LARGE number of people gathering the tools and supplies necessary to resist tyranny – and resist we will.
During our Revolution against once-great Britain, less than 3% of the men in the colonies actually took up arms, and less than 10% did anything at all to support them – anything as minor as donating a blanket or a bowl of soup to a freezing soldier.
Imagine 3% of our 300+ million! Even if it was only 3% of gun-owners, that would still put three million men in active resistance.
Even if that figure was high – by a factor of TEN – can you imagine the havoc that 300,000 insurgents could cause?
If (G*d FORBID!) something like this came to pass, it wouldn’t be big battles like we’ve seen in the past – it would be more akin to the Warsaw uprising – with VERY well-armed Jews! Or – more likely – much like Iraq, without all the tribal and ethnic divisions. A fair percentage of our military would revolt as well, with some individuals simply walking away AWOL, and some entire units bugging out with all their equipment to join the resistance.
The unfortunate reality is that the average enlisted guy knows nothing of the Constitution and just follows the orders passed to him by his chain of command. On the other hand, SOME percentage of them and their officers DO know what their oath means, and they will keep it. I believe the result will be all sorts of confusion and paranoia will serve to cause serious disruption in capabilities.
Imagine a group of soldiers and their NCOs who “frag” their superiors and desert – how hard would it be for other field-officers to be effective? Imagine the aftermath when it became clear that *SOMEONE* (or more likely, a LOT of someones) inside was informing the resistance?
Even if the “resistance” was nothing more than the occasional die-hard Patriot determined to kill the first man through his door before they killed him? How long before they start finding it impossible to get someone to be first through the door?
Personally, I believe that *MOST* of the various “alphabet-agencies’” personnel will gladly escalate their thuggery if allowed, though some will desert and others carefully act as “moles” for the resistance – I believe this bunch will be the worst of the lot.
Even the lowliest .mil private, though, will begin having second thoughts when he’s seen enough people – people just like his parents/cousins/aunts/uncles/neighbors/etc – die at the hands of those who have sworn to protect them. They don’t need to be Constitutional scholars to know this is
W R O N G.
It won’t be the fantasy of the “Red Dawn” types for sure, but it won’t be as easy as your ending makes it seem either.
All that said, please let me repeat how much I appreciate and have enjoyed your writings. I *WILL* buy the book when it’s available, and eagerly await your further writings!
Until then, Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death!

Thanks for the story John, if nothing else it may have awakened a few lost souls to the ugly possible and yet probable truth. Most Americans are the proverbial frog in the pot of boiling water and don’t even know it. I wonder how many so called AWARE Americans would really put thier lives and the lives of thier families on the line to protect our constitution, at least what’s left of it. True freedom lovers are a quickly dying breed and with the war tested technoligies available to our goverment I’m not sure a resistence to the tyrrany to come will last long enough to be remembered. On the other hand… the numbers of those who would supress our freedom are small and a well lead group of militia, or our own US military could and hopefully would quickly crush those that would enslave us. Pray for the best, prepare for the worst.

The complete blovel could in all honesty be the first chapter of a novel. The door is open, other than the author himself being shot in the head, for a continuation of the lives of the females for Home Guard and the diverse directions that could be explored. Good work John.. very entertaining. RIP Joe Stack.

John i have been reading TDTDD since it first came out and i hae to say the ending is very depressing but it is reality. The government have contingency plan when the dollar actually dies. However there are alot of patriotic male and females in the military and they will go apes##t if this were to go down. Not to mention militiamen who have been preparing for this day. The story leaves so many questions. Has our debt been forgiven? I remember a chapter where the Japanese want non dollar assets as payments for the debt. And does this mean Herr Obama is president for life? John there are states that are passing sovereign rights laws. I know the govt has a plan but i think they underestimate us. The plans Obama have set up in the story is similar to the “amero” rumors from five years ago. I do not believe the screamin eagles, the same screamin eagles that fought in Bastogne the same 101st that fought in that bloody hill(hill 937 aka hambuger hill) would play ball with marxist globalist Obama. But you put a thought provoking story John. I’m 18 hatian american in brooklyn, ny and i try to convinced my friends,my family, even my girlfriend whats coming some think i’m crazy others listen but try to change the subject. John your a great writer, story teller, economic analyst and this was a great story not the ending i liked but still the best i read in a long time. Hope you come with a sequel!

A quick bit: In the battle between David and Goliath, the smart money bets on Goliath. But Goliath does not want to fight his weight in wasps. No matter which way Goliath turns, he’s still got a back side. And what’s unprotected, gets stung.
.
This is day 8 into the scenario. And the chief politician goes on TV to announce victory. Well, he sort of has to doesn’t he? But if the inside team is partying and whooping it up, the majority of the stores in the country are still empty. And the ships still aren’t docking in ports because the real goods producers don’t just want a brand new exchange rate of promises, they want value for value.
.
As a scenario, the story to this point is still young. In Washington DC’s head they may have won. And they may have this fond dream of reorganizing the political structure combined with the “tax and spend our way to prosperity” policy, but in reality, the stores are still empty. A politician who makes grandiose promises for tomorrow does not have all that many tomorrow’s before delivery must be made.
.
We only have a look at small parts of the country in the story. One assumes the author means to give this as a general guide to what is widely happening. So take a quick tally on some of what’s been presented:
-Mike the trucker has his rig destroyed. He and the truck won’t be pulling any more loads anyplace. And his farm is likely destroyed, producing nothing more.
-John’s boss burns his business to the ground and commits suicide. That part of the economic structure is gone and the executive talent that ran it too.
-Tom, Sandy, and Lillian make their last stand. Another farm bites the dust, producing nothing. And there is one less dairy herd all of a sudden.
.
The point here is O can claim victory. But upon occasion, politicians have been known to exaggerate or even (gasp) lie! If it becomes government policy, perhaps not by intent, but certainly by action, to make war on the productive elements of society, then the boyz in charge, who never ran a business, are going to run into a real hard fact: The stores are still empty.
.
History, which JG is a student of, has a name for this. It is called a Pyrrhic victory. Winning here costs the victor more than the loser. It just isn’t apparent to the victor yet.
.
Now a sequel could start to explore why this is the case. Plus, in only 8 days, the war isn’t over yet. Goliath, fighting his weight in wasps, gets tired and needs to sleep. Some wasps are always sleeping and waking up fresh for their next go at the giant.
.
And being a giant makes you a big target.

I’m always up for a happy ending to a series like this, but you’ve nailed the essence of what would probably really happen. I appreciated the time that you’ve spent in crafting your tale. I hope that you keep writing.
This weekend for me was one of high anxiety. Would it actually happen this weekend? Will it actually happen at all? What can I do? What can any of us do?
For me, I have to trust in God and that he knows the endgame and he is in control. I’m not here to proselytize to anyone. This is just who I am and I’m not going to apologize for it.
If I can say one thing to your readers, it would be-Don’t ever give up! This country and the Constitution is worth fighting for. This way of life and the Republic have given hope to the hopeless. Don’t lay down, don’t run. Fight! Take it back!

Great ending. I think that is pretty much right on with how things will go.
For those of you who have a fantasy of the military saving us all. It’s not going to happen. The only way anyone is going to be able to resist is if they have food. How many people do you all know that have at least a month of food on hand? Probably not many. How about six months? How many national gaurd members have that?
So you guys think that in a time of emergency all the gaurd members are going to go home instead of being provided food? I don’t think so. They are going to do what ever they are told to do in order to provide for their families. Any who do leave will immediately be a target and hunted down. So by leaving they put their families at risk.
Then look at your community, there might be 2 out of 100 that have any preps, you don’t think the other 98 are going to do what ever it takes to not starve? Our food supply is completely dependent on national transport, without it we don’t eat.
I also love the Al queda reference in the speach, you know that any acts will be linked to them in order to generate the required fear from the public. Most people just want to lay low and live their lives, if they think you are a threat to that you had better believe you will be turned in.
Like I said I think the ending was pretty much true to reality.

I’m sure some people will think it is a realistic scenario, but lets face the US Gov’t can’t even handle Iraq, never mind a population 10 times as large and at a time when its currency is worth nothing. A very enjoyable read for the most part, though somewhat rushed. As a trucker myself, I think the language would get a LOT saltier and it’s debatable how many drivers would cooperate. As far as the American troops are concerned, my wife and I (both veterans) agree that the majority of US troops wouldNOT cooperate with this NWO crap. State police agancies are still the most dangerous I believe. Bottom line: “CRY HAVOC AND LET SLIP THE DOGS OF WAR!”

Wow!!! A bit better outcome, but still, being investigated for what you listen to in your own back yard… Here we go!
.
.
.
“On Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, around 1:00 pm my dog ran off inside a neighbor’s house. I was walking my dog home when two cars drove past me, then parked. I was thinking real estate agents until they asked me if I lived at this house. I said, “Yes,” and they showed docs and badges. I invited them into my home.
.
They said that I was not in any trouble and that they wanted to ask me some questions, so we sat at the table. They said there was a complaint that they had to look into about me.
.
I got pissed off and expressed my discomfort on how neighbors can’t be trusted. I stated, “All I do is listen to Infowars outside while working in the yard around this house.”
.
I never go anywhere. Then I said that Alex Jones warned his listeners about stuff like this happening. Before this day, I laughed at little things like this. Wow! Alex is right. Still with an attitude of disbelief, short of them calling me a terriest, I rambled on about things I have read about the Sons of Liberty, I asked if they were patriots or terrorists still rambling on very angrily how people are ratting neighbors out, thinking, “I am an American.” Wow, how far we have come. I said, “We live in a police state.”
They asked me if I belonged to a local group and was planning to overthrow the government. I laughed at these guys and said, “How is that even possible? I would have better luck recruiting you guys.” They agreed with a smile on their faces.
.
Then they asked if they could finish asking the questions because they do not think anything is here and they had bigger fish to fry. I said, “Ya,” and made a comment that history repeats itself, and when their use is up after disarming the public, they will be next. Our children deserve to have the same freedoms, and if the time ever comes, we are on the same side and they needed to know what is going on.
.
I told them to listen to Alex Jones. “Who’s he?” they asked. So we finished. As we were walking out I asked how they felt about Janet Napolitano and right away they said they did not like her. I finished by saying, “Because of her memo, most Americans are right wing extremists.” Then they said, “We did not vote for this president either.” They left with smiles on there faces.”

But, just because John died, and Tom, Lillian, Sandy & Mike will most likely die in the next 24 to 48 hours, does not mean there is no one else to fight on! I think there would be!
In discussions of this story with others (that I’m certain of) it’s been pointed out by many that they believe MOST police & sheriff deputies & military personnel, in addition to millions of everyday citizens, will resist such a move to overthrow our Constitution. On the other hand I would not trust my nephew & his air head girl friend who are in the active Reserves!
And to the Author, John…. There IS a means of self-publishing on line to make some money from it. Get your story lined out, write the first few chapters & make them so the first one or two really pull the reader in. Post just the first couple on line for free. Notify everyone who has commented on this story with the web address. I’ll tell everyone that I passed this story on to & the friend who told me about it. They will pass it on, etc.
But, for readers to get the rest of the story sell subscriptions — small amount ($10-$12) payable by credit card, password good only from a specific computer.

Well, John, you finished, and many don’t like the finish, or think it not realistic. Let me say I found the whole series to be quiet realistic, including the ending. That’s not to say it would end that way, it’s just the likely outcome. I say the love of comfort will doom us to the end you propose, but do see one chink in the government’s armor, and that’s the electrical grid. It would be fairly easy for a determined enemy to take down, even in small numbers, and the lack of electricity would gum up the government’s efforts to control its citizens. You might use that scenario if you want to continue the series, and give me the credit for the idea, if not any money. Lol. Just kidding on the money part. Suffice it to say I will eagerly await the book, but don’t wait very long, or you may miss out altogether as your book turns into reality.

So let’s take stock of all this and try to come to a conclusion of what John is proposing in this scenario:
1) The New World Order wins. The North American Union (by some name) has already replaced the United States of America within one week of the “Death of the Dollar”.
2) Most of the main players are either already dead, or soon will be. About the only real survivors would be middle- to small-town snitches who could avoid being blown up like that guy a couple chapters back.
Anyone else (not already dead — and I would assert the number of dead already (at the end of the first week) at at least 25 million, if not more, as most of the major cities will probably burn, not unlike the Atlanta riots, and then the crackdown will take down many more) will probably be either snitches (as I said above), or imprisoned/enslaved/killed in the new prison/concentration-camp system Obama proposed in the last speech (of at least 20 million people, if not more — probably on top of the “FEMA camps” already proposed.
3) The NAU will probably be a slave state to the New World Order.
4) Freedom is dead. The NAU probably will resemble Orwell’s “1984″.
So, if I read this correctly, you’re proposing essentially what the NWO conspiracy theorists come to: Massive elimination of population by eliminating all declared “undesireable” (I’d say, frankly, at least 2/3 of the present US population is gone, regardless of preparations…), submission to authority is absolute and necessary for life, etc.
5) Lastly, for me: If this scenario were to play out, I don’t survive the week. Even with preparations…

I happen to be a proponent of the idea that demise of the United States might be by way of an EMP pulse. To be sure, the collapse of the dollar is entirely possible but, I think an EMP pulse might be more favorable. I’m sure that nearly the same numbers would die off, maybe even more. But an EMP pulse would also affect the government intervention to a much larger extent.
.
As for the determined taking down the electrical grid, that won’t be hard at all. A high power rifle and a strategic transformer at a strategic sub-station or two, and power would be extinguished almost at will.
.
I’ve seen this type activity take place at companies that endured Union strikes. One well placed 30-06 on a sub-station transformer and the entire transformer will have to be replaced.
.
These are not an item that is on a parts shelf anywhere, they are usually only ordered when needed as their maintenance is usually tightly controlled.
.
And if co-ordinate strikes against several sub-stations took place, power would be disrupted in those areas for weeks, if not months.

Many elites chose not to be involved in Boston in 1775. Meanwhile the mob rioted and the Massacre occurred. Instead of those elites being rich in British pounds and trade deals with UK, France, or Germany; they got submarined when the Continental currency collapsed.
Much of our nation permits a taxation scheme which is more onerous than those the founders saw from the British monarchy in 1775.

No BOB , I can’t dis-agree more . We don’t have to die , We continue to fight . Shoot, move ,Communicate. I find it a little strange that the author did not weave into the story that groups would in fact survive , places of refuge might be found and resistance would continue and even expand . As a former Alaskan , I was proud that my former state would be mostly independent . If the author was interested he might write a follow up story about the future where the military would revolt an fight back and win . I hope this is not the end .

Great story, definitely needs to be threshed out some more to provide a rounder picture but knowing the format, it must be hard to do in a ‘blovel’. [what do I know really, I've never done one but as an avid reader its just my opinion]
~
I don’t agree with some of it and find other parts to be suspect. The map would be way more red than shown, but knowing it came from the government would require a disbelief in reality anyway.
~
I hate the scenario at the end. I would have much rather hoped the 82nd would have found them and taken them to a .gov free safe zone held by patriots. Would have opened up a whole other story line…
~
I refuse to believe that there are members in the 82nd capable of this, but again its just a story. I hope they are true warriors and not soldiers…
~
The difference?
” a warrior is a man who chooses his battles based on a personal directive, while a soldier is a man whose battles are chosen for him regardless of what he believes”

/it seems to me[just thinking out loud here] that the punch line of the story could be seen as to just go with the program and be rewarded, be part of the club, take bribes, give bribes, be part of the new socialist order and be the haves and not the have nots[or be the one with a choice of head or heart shot]

There’s a nifty short story, BugOut by Half-Fast a short story that was among the first GOOD (Get Out Of Dodge) and TSHTF and TEOTWAWKI that caused me to sleuth around and find other works in this fictional genre.
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=172494
Suggestion from an ol’ hack, John. I know you CAN write good short stories – for I’ve read your piece about the little girl who decided to open a lemonade stand and how the imbroglio got her family behind the eight ball. Short story writing is actually excellent training grounds for novelists.
I, personally, would like to see you grab hold of other concepts (someone mentioned EMP – which some Congressional Committee some time ago concurred was the #1 probability of an attack against the USA). Maybe you can research and find out what the Top Ten attacks they delineated were… and handle them one after one in short story format. To do so would widen your thinking/creativity impulse and you’d have to shift some mental gears, but it would be excellent “exercise”.
I might point out that it’s been done successfully and profitable in the past – by none other than Stephen King, who after CARRIE and perhaps SALEM’S LOT (or maybe it was JERUSALEM’S LOT – I no longer recall for certain) King came out with a fantastic collection of his short stories NIGHT SHIFT that I rather regret donating to the VA Hospital along with a lot of other former works in my ever increasing and shifting personal “library” for I’d rather like to reread it.
In addition to my own career of 35 years I taught writing at college level, and I loved guiding other people – and some of them have been on Best Seller lists over the years. A great student gets excited to “pick up a challenge”.
I’ll admit, there’s a part of this ol’ hack dawg that feels like doing it – but as I tell folks, nowadays when the itch to write again starts to overtake, I take a painkiller, or fix an Irish Whiskey Coffee and wait for the sensation to pass. Except for a tad bit of blogging I do on a financial type set that I consider public service mouthing-off, LOL.
Oh! And while you’re at it, John, continue with picking different “locales” for the story. You handle them well. I related to the Fergus Falls, MN setting – my maternal grandmother’s parents hailed from there. And it IS the repository for the Minnesota State Mental Hospital…heh, heh. HOW the country is affected even in the here and now, depends very much on ‘where’. In my travels I have seen how in metro suburbia in many places people are almost totally unaware of the realities of fellow citizens – except for places like Detroit where there is no avoiding what’s goin’ on.
I’m sure I’m not alone in a desire to see more of your fiction on this blog. You’ve put a real John Galt Fictional Monkey on Our Collective Backs, young man! LOL

*If you’re in a zone of resistance and you’re geographically cut off from other zones by a significant distance-like the Upper Penninsula of Michigan, Vermont/New Hampshire-you have to expand resistance immediately, find a way to a zone that has a chance to link up with other zones of resistance or you can count on being overwhelmed. The West, those zones could come together but they’d have to work very, very hard at exanding in toward the territory between them. They also have the additional problems of a relative lack of a road network, tough geography, relative lack of refined resources like fuel, etc.
*Yeah, I see the South is going to rise again in your scenario. Nobody on that side of the Mason-Dixon line is going to have any good night’s rest for a decade. How far can the South rise if the zone of resistance can grow into a full fledged secession? South Carolina has lots of nuclear power plants, there’s a LOT more industry relatively speaking, still a strong gun culture, and if the racial problems can be overcome by the outside enemy there’s hope. The South would be a lot stronger relatively speaking versus the occupied zone than the Confederacy-PLUS with problems in Vermont, Michigan and the West perhaps the South can divert enough resources to allow those isolated pockets to expand, and perhaps overwhelm the occupied zones.
*Rapid, aggresive expansion of the NUMBER of resistance pockets both in city and country is the key to survival and victory. This strategy can work best in the Midwest east of the Mississippi as there’s enough in the way of a road network and number of communities to swamp any Home Guard from being able to effectively police everywhere. Resistance pockets isn’t just guns and ammo, it is being able to start and sustain a free economy using gold, silver, seed, fuel, asset/labor backed script that’s commonly recognized… basically our own backed dollar. And forgive the oversimplification but isn’t THAT what was scripted to get us to your blovel in the first place?
Learn to shoot. Learn to be of use with basic trade skills. Form survival groups-more than one and try to coordinate. Get involved with local politics; form a full ticket of candidates and sweep a local corrupt town clean as we need to start making some form of political base of nonviolent noncompliance now. And a save haven… Use the recall election process-I outline this strategy here:

Hmmmm….I have loved the series
Not sure of the ending, I think there is more hope than this. Currently there are 90 milion gun owners in the US, of those many hold more than 1, and some not registered, so confiscation will be more difficult. I am not saying the ending is not a possibility but a determined few can stall any movement against 300 million americans. I suspect this would be the early scenerio

Thanks; great story
One thing that worried me about Y2K was NOTHING HAPPENING, and folks remaining in slumber. Another decade of indoctrination has pased, and despite the manifest threats, we have a nation where 52% of voters opted for ZOTUS.
That’s a very very bad prognostic sign.
I like the downbeat ending to the story …. hopefully it’ll B-slap folks a bit, and make them do some real tactical and strategic thinking. And some logistic preps
Hopefully

John – good story. I’m not convinced this is over though. Mike is still alive. The guy who got caught by the 82nd Airborne was talking in the first person – how could he do that if he was dead – he wouldn’t be able to recap his side of the story in the first person? Maybe the boom was not him getting shot in the head, but the soldier standing over him getting taken out (perhaps the wife and some others snuck up and took out that group of soldiers). Tom, Lillian and Sandy were still alive at the close. Sorry, this screams for a sequel (or a sequels) where the story is played out a little more.

Great yarn but like many others I hated the ending. I understand why you did it, but ugh… I would like to suggest something should you rework the ending in a novel form. The publishing of the map showing the areas of resistance is a Major Mistake for the president-for-life and statist forces. At that point many patriots would be sitting tight and not resisting for lack of information and fear of being in the fight alone. Now everybody could see that the resistance is widespread and where to go to join the fight. I suspect Mike E and friend might just meet up with a score or more of like-minded heavily armed comrades on the way to the Mississippi battle. Thank you for the time and energy that you put into the story.

John,
As others have stated, I have been following the developments in this story since it first came out. I have to say that it was a most excellent read — even if the ending felt rushed and overly pessimestic.
Personally, I don’t see where the Gubment has the level of foresight and pre-planning this story alludes to, and knowing quite a few current law enforcement and military members (and being former Navy myself) I would have to say that the efforts at outreaching by Oathkeepers is beginning to pay off in a large way in the sense that many, if not most of the current military and LE personnel would be on OUR side if the Feds tried to pull this kind of maneuver. As several others have stated or alluded to, I also personally believe that even if your sequence of events does play out to one extent or another, I feel that the various Militias, pockets of survivalists, and other hearty strong willed individuals will be a continual thorn in the sides of the oppressors.
At the risk of sounding like a religous nut, what I have been seeing happening globally over the last 2-3 years (and especially in the last several months) leads me to the belief that what we might be looking at isn’t just a collapse in the dollar and US/Western economies, but rather the beginnings of God’s judgement as foretold in Revelations. Consider the various earthquakes and natural disasters occuring in places not normally subjected to them, the potential of famine in the US ( http://www.marketskeptics.com/2009/12/2010-food-crisis-for-dummies.html), the reports coming out about GMO foods being a long-term killer, and to me anyway, its starting to look like the coming collapse will be on a Biblical scale, not just a national/regional scale.
Meanwhile, keep up the great work, and I look forward to your more serious writings.

i see the ending in a more positive light! the boom was not john taking a head shot, but the traitor taking the head shot, from one of johns nieghbors hiding in the bush. tom is headed out to help dig in, lilian and sandy along with the others, are still cookin, all that freshly butcherd beef and all! the children are safe, who will all mature quickly, with attitude. then you have mike, the hero all stories real or fiction have, along with his new warrior buddy are still truckin. headed back into battle with their newly formed private army, and freshly painted booby trap!
for sure none of them have given up! i guess i won’t either.

For those referencing an EMP strike, may I suggest the book “One Second After”?
For a scenario about a multiple event collapse (one dern thing after another), I reference “Deep Winter” and “Shattered”.
Excellent story, John, and a realistic end to the beginning. Hopefully there will be more to come.

The sad reality is that most folks, even those patriots reading this story, will not realize when it’s time to act. Human nature being what it is, folks will take some, then take some more, hoping that things will “stabilize” or “get better”. Nobody wants to be the fool who sticks his neck out a minute too soon.
The thought for most folks is “I’ll join the fight when everyone else starts fighting. The chains may already be on at that point or you may no longer have the means to fight effectively. The line between being really pissed off and taking action is a fuzzy one and not always so easy to see. So ask yourselves, where is my line drawn?

TD9 continues to attempt to call me names and post so this time, I shall approve this one post by editing it.
I don’t walk into your house, shit on your sofa, make out with your wife then call you names. If you think you’re just going to come to my blog and act like a rude steaming pile, you’ve made a mistake Obamabuttboy.
When you are PAYING for this bandwidth, you can come into my corner and say and do what you want. You want to call me a piece of crap?
Go to hell.
You want to call me a government stooge?
Burn in hell.
I don’t listen to crap from keyboard commando piss-ants who think they have a clue as to what the hell they are talking about. I’m paying for this you buy your own blog and you can say and do whatever you want. I don’t have time for whining losers, only those who GET IT and your commentary goes straight into SPAMINATOR hell so the world does not have to listen to your TRIPE on my blog.
In the mean time, I hold the banhammer and children like you can head back to the shithole you crawled out from and carry on.

Retired Old Hack’s words are sooth. Such short stories I remember from Night Shift were, Survivor Type, The Mangler, The Raft, Quitter’s Inc., The Ledge, Toy Soldiers, amongst others. The story The Long Walk under the pseudonym of Richard Bachman was also a worthy read. We all raise a glass to you and your efforts Mr. Galt. You’ve done us all proud. Hurry back to your gulch please. A party to end all parties awaits you.

Thanks John, I had a great time! But the shot to the head was a doozy…
As for the 101st and 82nd — COMPLETELY believable. Why? Even if 40% chose to sit on their hands and refuse orders (Oathkeepers perhaps) — That leaves 60% that would obey orders. Remember, there are always those sob’s that are motivated by power and prestige – they would surely fill in the gaps.
Question: Would the 40% Attack the other 60%?
Very doubtful in this scenario, they most likely would have been locked down in a FEMA CAMP somewhere. —- As for Katrina — I have seen the videos… does anybody know of ANY soldier or LEO refusing to partake in the gun confiscation? I don’t. Not even one. — I think that JG was right in his assertion that the 101st and 82nd could be reliably used to squelch dissenters(I mean terrorists). All we can hope for is that the “Oathkeepers” will educate the masses of the military/LEO’s and avoid JG’s outcome.

Sorry, this is not realistic at all. The government could ** never execute such a wide scale plan so quickly ** – admit it. Second, the depiction of service members and government workers is also inconsistent with reality. With a couple generations obsessed with their “rights” vice “responsibilities” – they all know they’re “innocent until proven guilty” and need to have their “rights read to them” – this story just does not hold water. Service members are not zombies – it is in fact he most educated military we’ve ever had. The fast-paced economic collapse part was excellent. The rest is mostly tired, absurd NWO conspiracy theory.
Collapse is likely coming – only a miracle could avert it with the economic and demographic we face, but this story is NOT how it will happen.

I hate the ending, what a waste of time. They get all geared up to stick it to the man, then it fizzles out.
This is more disappointing than Stephen King’s “It”. The whole story was great until you find out Pennywise the Clown was really a friggen giant spider! It just seemed like this series had an uninspired ending, basically telling everyone “America sucks, and your all screwed. No one will stand up to them. The end.”
Good luck on your book..

Dead on, Hank Reardon. Fan of yours. I assume you are “the” Hank Readon and that it’s your wisdom I’ve read online here, there ‘n everywhere.
Words, ya gotta love em. Good vocabulary is like a 5 star chef with a complete spice shelf (listening John,LOL?) I’ve written text book treatments of ‘word use’ to sharpen focus, etc. etc. blah, blah and feeding the mind and imagination of readers’ intellects by careful choice when serving up a heaping portion of fiction.
Sooth? Yes, as in the soothsayer application. But properly it is listening to the still and quiet voice of The Holy Spirit, always a Gentleman. Dark spirits (as in testing the spirits) are rush-rush rat bastids without that sense of peace – sooth!
Not that what I writing is always…sooth(ing) as in calmy effect, heh, heh.
BTW I was drawing some blanks on the titles listed. I always liked The Lawnmower Man by King, and also the one where vehicles-went-wild and semi’s were lined up at a truckstop demanding to be fed (fueled) and some of his works from Night Shift. Reading King’s works and payin’ attention to what he does on the page is some of the best stuff for self-teaching yourself how to write effectively.
I came up with an anacroymn for those PITA types who try to disrupt forums and comments that John hadda deal with a few entries about. TWAPs which stands for Trolls With A Purpose. Often shills and disinfo artists who tend to be like a turd surfacing in a great kettle of soup, alas.

Thanks Retired Old Hack but I can’t take the credit for another man’s words. I have made a handful of comments on Mr. Galt’s blog but only here within his threads under that name because it seems to fit the meme. Decades ago while reading Piers Anthony novels, I quickly noticed that they always ended happily. Which becomes quickly tiresome. Presently I seem to be reading Neil Stephenson and Dan Simmons. Stephen King’s greatest skill is character development, the story itself can almost seem ancillary because you’re so engrossed with the characters. John does a great thing here by unlocking minds. You are right sir, there is talent here.

Well John, I have held off reading the last chapter until now I was afraid of an ending like this, not that I wanted a Hollywood ending or anything just a bit of hope, that is in no way a comment or critique on the story as I think it progressed to it’s natural conclusion given the strict time line you imposed on the finish.
Others have offered you good advice regarding charecter development, plot lines, sub plots etc I agree with many of them and await more of your creative writting. As a free peice of fiction online this has been very entertaining.
I assume that the reason that you wrote this was to “wake” people up, in that I think you have been successful I have derived many good tips from this story. Many people have offered their encouragement and I would like to add my voice to the din, well done.
I don’t remember how I first arrived on this site but I’m glad I got here I have been and will continue to be a daily visitor as I find most of what you bring to the table significant. Thanks again.

Hope for the best but prepare for the worse. That’s all we can do. Every comment brings a bew slant and every slant is useful.
This is a big crystal ball for all of us to peer into and glean what we can.
What I see for 2010 is a 30-50% devaluation of the American dollar, partly to obliterate OPEC. War with Iran is on the back burner for another 1-1 1/2 years, unless Israel does something first. Big inflation.

Good job! I was a little disappointed that the opposition didn’t put up more of a fight, but such an outcome would not be so surprising – after all, the government has been stealing hundreds of billions of dollars from us and preparing for this for more than 40 years!
