While America slumbers, the deterioration of the political condition of many of its key allies in the MENA region continues to accelerate. King Mohammed VI (also known as M6 in the country) proposed a series of reforms over the past week but kept key powers such as retention of the commander in chief role over the military and other political moves which despite an increase in civilian power, ultimately leaves the King as the supreme power in the land.
According to a story from the BBC News, protests are now being planned for Sunday by the February 20th movement, the original protest organization which has not demanded the King’s ouster but a legitimate increase in powers for the population. This group has been engaged in some violent actions against the government but has generally followed the pattern of the Tunisian protesters attempting to resolve the crisis peacefully. The key thing to watch for in the weeks ahead is if the foreign meddling in Morocco increases with the Western Sahara militants increasing pressure on the Kingdom along with MENA based Al-Qaeda elements engaging in actions to further aggravate the crisis.
Keep in mind that China and the followers of the ideal of creating a fundamentalist Islamic caliphate in North Africa must remove this key American ally from the picture if they are to succeed. Barring some serious reforms within the kingdom, it would appear the situation in Morocco is destined to follow a similar pattern to the protests in Tunisia and quite possibly as severe as the Egyptian uprising.
