Uh, oh Apple’s Wrist Porno Device has a Defect

The headline from the Drudge Report says it all:

The story via Marketwatch is even worse:

A key component of the Apple Watch made by one of two suppliers was found to be defective, prompting Apple Inc. to limit the availability of the highly anticipated new product, according to people familiar with the matter.

The part involved is the so-called taptic engine, designed by Apple AAPL, -0.65% to produce the sensation of being tapped on the wrist. After mass production began in February, reliability testing revealed that some taptic engines supplied by AAC Technologies Holdings Inc., of Shenzhen, China, started to break down over time, the people familiar with the matter said. One of those people said Apple scrapped some completed watches as a result.

Oops. So why did Apple have to destroy a bunch of their toys? Because the warranty issues after the hype are already going to kill them as reflected by the action in their stock today (from Yahoo Finance):

While this is not a major crash of the stock, it is the first ‘chink’ in their armor.

No apologies for the pun.

Apple makes great products but this is a toy. Serious consumers have no use for this product unless they want to play Dick Tracy or watch porno on their wrists.
