The United States citizenry continues to enjoy this bubble of disbelief, told repeatedly that the threats of the Arab Spring uprisings are overblown and that the concerns expressed are rantings of anti-Obama and anti-Democracy forces. Unfortunately for one of the most inept State Department regimes in U.S. history, the Arab Spring did in fact give way to an Islamist Winter and the dominoes have been falling as feared, one nation at a time.
Kuwait joins this list of nations which are enduring a revolutionary fervor and shift towards an Islamic fundamentalist mindset which further destabilizes the region. The elections this past Thursday gave two thirds of the parliament to the Islamists which should send a shudder down the spines of Pentagon Generals and Saudi royalty. With this drastic shift in the sentiment of the Kuwaiti people against Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and the corruption inherent within the last government and apparently the royal family, the West has been put on notice. While the Europeans and Americans slumber through the winter of false perceptions, Iran and the Muslim Brotherhood have been busy instilling discontent throughout the Muslim world.
The demands of opposition leaders for the establishment of a constitutional monarchy are in line with the radical reforms being proposed in Morocco, another U.S. ally. If this movement succeeds in its goals without violence and the Emir agrees to the new reforms, the American military presence in the region will probably lose its bases and foothold in Kuwait, thus opening the door to more mischief, courtesy of Iranian backed Shi’ite movements. Stay tuned for developments as this domino begins to fall during this long Islamist Winter.
