The headlines and stories today tell a sad, disgusting story:
Report: Penn State Officials Hid Abuse
Penn State scandal: Freeh Report blasts disregard for welfare of victims
Probe Condemns Penn State’s “Total Disregard” For Victims’ Welfare
Penn State board takes ‘full responsibility’ for failures
Penn State Probe Accuses Paterno of Cover-Up
Penn State football likely to sidestep suspension-experts
Dramatic? Yes.
Pathetic? Very much so.
The biggest concern of Penn State fans and those centrally involved in this scandal is not the children, oh hell no, we can not worry about the children.
It’s about legacies.
A statue.
Is this scandal where children, I repeat, CHILDREN, were raped by an adult in authority. Yet the biggest concerns expressed by some alumni, some media members, and of course the perverse apologists of the sports media and the Happy Valley region?
Does this mean players will leave the team?
God can not damn those defending the actions by these souls defending the likes of Jerry Sandusky fast enough for this writer.
America is in decline and this episode is a reflection of a society without morals, with a bitter disregard for the rule of law, and willingness of profit to surpass proper, hell, decent human behavior over right and wrong. If I were a Pennsylvania State University (hereafter known as “Pedophile State University”) alumni, I would not be ashamed of my degree or the education program, but demanding a cessation of all aspects of the football program until the entire matter is settled. In this case, some estimates of settling this nightmare exceed $300 million and based on the reading of the Sandusky trial transcripts, more likely in excess of half a billion dollars. Then again, I’m an optimist.
If the primary concerns are the reactions of the television networks, the Big Ten, and gee, those innocent players had nothing to do with this, then I hope, I pray the Feds throw the book at every party implicated in the Jerry Sandusky trial and the Freeh Report below. America is experiencing a systemic decline where morality is a convenience and the abdication of protecting our children in the name of television contracts, profit, and “legacies” surpasses the needs of our future. This is what happened to Rome and how the fall accelerated as the duty to what is right was replaced by selfish gratification by destroying others, as opposed to using one’s selfishness to work hard, create a better society, and profit from one’s hard work to enhance the civilization.
We are Rome.
We are falling.
The time to reverse this decline is running short.
Or is it time to worry about the kickoff and the “Las Vegas Line” for betting odds on the next Penn State football game?
The actions of the NCAA, Big Ten, the State of Pennsylvania, and the FBI will answer the questions above. I do not hold out much faith that a just and moral course will be chosen.
P.S.- Why the black thumbnail? Because that is the level of concern expressed by many defenders of Paterno and the University in the media today…towards the victims.
