Stability? Peace? An Arab Spring which Conservative commentator Bill Kristol and President Obama agreed on being in the best interest of the region and people of Egypt? It would not be so laughable if it were not for the rapes, murder, torture, religious persecution, and cruelty being inflicted on the citizens of Egypt at the hands of a corrupt military bureaucracy. The quote at the top of this page is from the following article from the newspaper Al-Masyr Al-Youm, aka, The Egypt Independent:
Many Egyptians skip the polls, out of hopelessness or protest
The world media is reporting a large turnout but doing so by using propaganda by selected parties and the military to ensure a favorable review of the probably rigged outcome. If one bypasses the mainstream reports and listens to the people of the street, then the following excerpt from the story above tells the grim reality of what the average man in Cairo feels:
“Morsy doesn’t have the personality of a president and Shafiq is from the old regime,” says Hamdy Mahdy, who sells poultry. “We can’t have a revolution to remove the old regime and then bring it back. We’ll be the laughing stock of the world. I am disappointed with the elections. People don’t know what’s right anymore.”
After former socialist candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi lost in the first round, many have been left without a candidate to support. Khaled Hilal, a retired government employee, says he doesn’t believe either of the remaining candidates care for the country’s poor as Sabbahi did.
“Neither of them is good enough, what would I go for? The most important thing for me is for the winner to raise pensions and treat us well. I don’t see that in either of them,” says Hilal.
The crisis that is building in the region was further highlighted by the violence in Tunisia this week (CNS News: Tunisian Riots Follow Zawahiri’s Exhortation to Muslims to ‘Rise Up’) and the civil war brewing in Syria. If anyone believes the results from the Egyptian elections will not trigger further discontent and Islamist revolutionary activity, that soul has not been paying attention.
The ‘Arab Spring’ is about to erupt into a regional conflagration and with a weakened Saudi Arabian King and pathetic U.S. foreign policy, the situation is ripe for tens of thousands to die in a battle which will redefine the world’s relations in the Middle East for decades to come.
