The news out of the Middle East this year has been nothing but disturbing thus when one reads a story about a Sheikdom creating a mercenary force for either protection or domestic suppression it should not come as a shock. The New York Times this morning has this exact story:
Secret Desert Force Set Up by Blackwater’s Founder
The story by Mark Mazzetti and Emily B. Hager was controversial because it highlighted the re-emergence of the former founder of Blackwater creating a mercenary force in a kingdom which has not experienced any unrest. Thus the question must be asked: Is this 800 man strong force to be used a the behest of the UAE and House of Saud to intervene in other nations such as Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, Kuwait, or perhaps even Iraq? While that does not sound like a strong force, knowing the methodology of these Sheiks, odds are it will be used only for suppressing domestic discontent on the Arabian peninsula with extreme prejudice.
The Arab Spring is about to evolve into an Arab Summer of Blood where the dictators of the region will now engage in any all tactics and methods to maintain their brutal regimes. Of course expect nothing more than lip service from the administration in Washington as I seriously doubt we will see a “no fly zone” over Riyadh at any point in our life times.
