Just when the waters were calmed down a touch as the Speaker of the House did not indicate any visit to Taipei was imminent (see 07.31.22 Pelosi Drops any Mention of Visiting Taiwan) this gem drops just a little over an hour ago from TVBS reporter Tingting Liu:
There is nothing from the speaker’s entourage to confirm this report as of 5 a.m. EDT today.
The reaction from the government controlled media via Hu Xijin of the Global Times was swift and threatening:
The Japanese media is reporting that the US is deploying its forces closer to Taiwan as this news was breaking thus there might be some validity to the TVBS reporter’s information. From Nikkei Asia about 30 minutes ago:
The U.S. military is moving assets, including aircraft carriers and large planes, closer to Taiwan ahead of an anticipated but unconfirmed visit to the island by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The military was initially opposed to the speaker’s visit but now looks to be creating a buffer zone for Pelosi’s plane, in the case that she decides to go ahead with the controversial stop.
Stay tuned for updates later on today as just when the media thought things were calming down the breaking news this morning could well initiate a new wave of hostility out of Beijing.
The reaction to a potential visit is now triggered in full in Beijing:
Potentially more confirmation from Taiwan with a non-confirmation confirmation:
The next 72 hours will not be dull.
